A Nalgonda court convicted seven individuals for the 2018 honour killing of Pranay Kumar, sentencing Subhash Sharma to death and six others, including Asgar Ali, to life imprisonment.

HYDERABAD: A local court in Nalgonda district on Monday convicted seven accused in the 2018 honour killing of Pranay Kumar, awarding death penalty to Subhash Sharma and life imprisonment to six others, including Asgar Ali.

“The court in its decision convicted 7 accused for killing Pranay by awarding death sentence to Subhash Sharma and life imprisonment to six other accused including Asgar Ali,”

said Nalgonda Superintendent of Police, Sharat Chandra Pawar.

Notably, Asgar Ali was previously accused in the murder of former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya but was later acquitted.

In September 2018, Pranay Kumar, belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, was hacked to death in broad daylight by two assailants outside a hospital, where he had gone with his wife, Amrutha Varshni. The couple had married against the wishes of Amrutha’s family.

Police investigations revealed that Amrutha’s father, Maruthi Rao, was the mastermind behind the murder. He allegedly hired contract killers through Asgar Ali, who arranged hitmen to execute the murder in a well-planned conspiracy.

During the investigation, eight people were named as accused. However, before the trial could conclude, Maruthi Rao died by suicide. The case proceeded against the remaining seven accused, leading to their conviction.

“Though Maruthi Rao died by suicide, we still managed to get conviction because of the strong technical evidence, including CCTV footage which was gathered,”

said SP Pawar.

The sensational case has now reached its legal conclusion, with the court delivering harsh punishments to those involved in the brutal honour killing.
