Honeymoon Murder Row | Sonam Raghuvanshi Brought To Shillong, To Be Produced In Court Today

Meghalaya: Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is the main accused in the shocking murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, has now been brought to Shillong by the Meghalaya Police. She was taken overnight from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, then via road to Patna, and later flown to Kolkata before catching a flight to Guwahati.

After landing, she was secretly taken out of the airport through the cargo gate by the police and brought straight to the Sadar Police Station in Shillong. Before this, Sonam was also taken to Ganesh Das Hospital for a medical examination. She spent the night in the police station lock-up.

The police said that Sonam is in three-day transit remand, along with four other accused persons. These include her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha, and three others: Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Singh Chauhan. All of them are being kept in jail and will be produced before the local court soon.

This case has grabbed the attention of the entire country due to the brutal way it was carried out — under the cover of a honeymoon trip. Raja and Sonam had just gotten married on May 11. Just nine days later, on May 20, they went to Meghalaya for their honeymoon.

But it was only a one-way ticket, and this has raised serious questions. For three days, the couple enjoyed the scenic hills of Meghalaya. But after that, both suddenly went “missing.”

On June 2, Raja Raghuvanshi’s dead body was found in a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra area of Meghalaya. His body was in a decomposed condition, and this led to a murder investigation. Then, on June 7, Sonam was discovered unconscious at a dhaba in Ghazipur. She was taken to the Ghazipur Medical College for treatment. While there, she surrendered to the police and was arrested.

One of the major turning points in this case was a blood-stained raincoat that reportedly belonged to Sonam. Along with CCTV footage, digital traces, and statements from key witnesses, police began to piece together the plan behind what they now call a “contract killing.”

According to Shillong police sources, Sonam planned the murder with her lover, Raj Kushwaha, though he did not physically take part in the killing. He allegedly stayed in contact with her and made all the arrangements. The three men who carried out the murder are believed to be Raj’s friends. It is also being said that Sonam promised Rs 20 lakh to these men for killing her husband Raja.

On May 23, just a few days into their honeymoon, Sonam lured Raja to a remote hill area under the pretext of taking photos. The three accused followed them and started talking to Raja in Hindi. Sonam then started walking slowly, pretending to be tired, and stayed behind her husband and the accused. When they reached a deserted spot, Sonam shouted, “kill him.”

Meanwhile, one of the key details is how the police cracked this case. After Raja’s body was found on June 2, the police identified Sonam as a suspect the very next day, on June 3. They then created a special team of 20 officers, and named their investigation “Operation Honeymoon.”

According to the police, they found and arrested the three killers during overnight raids, and Sonam was found four days later in an unconscious state at the dhaba. Her arrest completed the police’s roundup of the main suspects.

When all four male accused were being taken to the airport in Indore by the police, an angry local citizen slapped one of the killers. Since all the accused were wearing face masks, no one could identify who among them got slapped, but it showed the level of public anger over the murder.

Raja Raghuvanshi’s family is heartbroken and demanding justice. His brother Sachin Raghuvanshi said Sonam being found alive raises many questions. His sister made an emotional public statement:

“My brother had vowed to be with Sonam Raghuvanshi for seven lives, but she couldn’t stay with him for even seven days. What did he do that you killed him.”

She also said,

“She could have eloped if she liked someone else.”

Sources now say that Sonam’s family already knew she didn’t want to marry Raja. Her mother also knew about her relationship with Raj Kushwaha, who worked in their family business.

The Meghalaya Police are continuing their investigation, and all five accused will soon be presented in court.
