[Hathras Stampede Incident] Six Volunteers Arrested , Baba May Face Questioning: UP Police

Today, 4th July, Six sevadars arrested in connection with the stampede in Hathras. The Uttar Pradesh Police indicated that Baba, a prominent figure related to the event, will be questioned if necessary. The incident has raised concerns over crowd management and safety protocols.

Uttar Pradesh: The Uttar Pradesh police announced on Thursday the arrest of six ‘sevadars’, including two women, from the organizing committee in relation to the Hathras stampede that resulted in 121 fatalities.

A senior officer mentioned that the sole accused named in the FIR remains at large, and preacher Surajpal, also known as Narayan Sakar Hari and Bhole Baba, will be interrogated if deemed necessary during the investigation.

Inspector General of Police (Aligarh Range) Shalabh Mathur stated,

“All six individuals who have been arrested were ‘sevadars’ (volunteers) at the ‘satsang’,”

Mathur stated,

“A reward of Rs 1 lakh will be announced soon, and a non-bailable warrant (NBW) will also be issued against the key accused, Devprakash Madhukar,”

The preacher, Surajpal, not named as an accused in the FIR filed on Tuesday at the Sikandra Rau police station, following the tragic stampede at Phulrai village which resulted in 121 fatalities.

According to police reports, those apprehended include Ram Ladaite (50), Upendra Singh Yadav (62), Megh Singh (61), Mukesh Kumar (38), and two women, Manju Yadav (30) and Manju Devi (40).

Ram Ladaite hails from Mainpuri district, Upendra Singh Yadav is from Manipuri, while the others are local residents of Hathras.

The police confirmed that all six individuals were arrested on Thursday by officials from Hathras Kotwali and Sikandra Rau police stations.

IG Mathur stated,

“During a detailed enquiry, the arrestees revealed that they are members of the organizing committee and serve as ‘sevadars’.”

He added,

“The organizers and members gathered the crowd and collected donations for the ‘satsang’ committee.”

An FIR lodged on July 2 under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 126 (2) (wrongful restraint), 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant), and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence).

Baba, expected to be summoned for questioning as part of the investigation. His involvement and the actions of his team during the event, under scrutiny to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the factors that led to the stampede.

Authorities are committed to uncovering the truth and taking necessary actions to prevent such tragedies in the future, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants in large gatherings. The investigation continues to unfold, with more details anticipated in the coming days.
