NEW DELHI: A Delhi court gave a very important judgment while freeing a man from serious rape charges.
The court not only found him innocent but also ordered legal action against the woman who filed the false case.
The judge said a very strong line that applies to many such cases in today’s time:
“It takes one’s lifetime to build a reputation but only few lies to destroy the same.”
The case was being heard by Additional Sessions Judge Anuj Agrawal. The man was accused of raping the woman complainant in a hotel in Delhi on the night between November 23 and 24, 2019.
After looking at all the evidence and hearing all witnesses, the court gave its final judgment on April 4. In the verdict, the court said:
“It is evident from record that prosecutrix gave false deposition before this court and concocted a mendacious story of rape/threat.”
Based on this, the accused was declared not guilty and was acquitted.
While going through the background of the woman, the court noticed that she had earlier filed many similar cases. In fact, there were already six rape and molestation cases filed by her against different men in the past.

According to Delhi Police, she was-
“in habit of giving false complaint of molestation and eve-teasing”
which raised serious doubts about her credibility.
The judge also found that the woman’s statements had “inherent contradictions”, which means her version of the story kept changing and was not trustworthy.
Explaining more about the case, the judge clearly said:
“The said circumstances, if seen cumulatively, unerringly lead to only one inference that victim entrapped accused in a preplanned manner, which further stands fortified in light of testimony of defence witnesses 1 and 2, who categorically deposed that victim had made a demand of Rs seven lakhs for stating in favour of accused so that he can be released on bail. There are no palpable reasons to disbelieve the version of defence witnesses.”
This means that the victim tried to trap the man in a fake case and even demanded Rs 7 lakh to take back the complaint. Two defence witnesses also confirmed this in court, and the judge believed their version.
The judge also talked about the bigger responsibility of the courts. He said that courts are not just here to decide who is guilty or innocent, but they also have a bigger duty to give justice to those who are truly suffering.
He stated:
“The courts act as healers to administer panacea of justice to the wounds of the aggrieved”
showing that even accused persons can sometimes be the real victims.
He added,
“The word ‘aggrieved’ cannot be confined only to complainants, but there may be cases where even the accused become the real sufferer, standing before the court with folded hands and beseeching justice for themselves.”
This shows that in some cases, the person who is blamed may actually be the one who is suffering the most. The judge said that simply saying “not guilty” is not enough.

In his final statement, the judge repeated the powerful line:
“It takes one’s lifetime to build a reputation but only few lies to destroy the same”
and directed that perjury proceedings (legal action for lying under oath) should be started against the woman for filing a false case.
