Ex-MLA Sentenced to Jail for Threatening to Blow Up Parliament Over "Unfulfilled Demands"

A Delhi court sentenced former MP MLA Kishore Samrite to 6 months in jail for threatening to bomb Parliament in 2022. He sent a parcel with suspected explosives, the Indian flag, and a copy of the Constitution.

New Delhi: Today, On May 30, A Delhi court has sentenced Kishore Samrite, a former MLA from Madhya Pradesh, to six months in jail for threatening to blow up the Indian Parliament in September 2022.

The punishment was given under Section 506 (Part II) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with criminal intimidation where the threat causes fear of death or serious harm.

The case goes back to September 16, 2022, when a parcel was received at the Parliament House. The parcel arrived through speed post and contained a suspicious substance believed to be connected to explosives.

Along with the substance, the parcel also included an Indian flag and a copy of the Constitution of India. This raised alarm among security personnel and resulted in a swift response from the authorities.

The court, while delivering the sentence on Friday, took into account the seriousness of the threat and its potential to disrupt national security.

Special Judge Vikas Dhull pronounced the sentence, saying,

“Convict has been sentenced for the period of 6 months for the offence under section 506 (II) IPC with fine.”

Kishore Samrite had reportedly made this threat as a way to express anger over his “unfulfilled demands”, although the court did not detail what those demands were.
