Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, along with Abhijit Mondal, the station house officer (SHO) who initially led the investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor.
The arrests made on charges of attempting to mislead investigators and concealing crucial evidence.
Ghosh and Mondal are accused of obstructing the probe into the high-profile rape and murder case, which had caused widespread public outrage across the country. Allegedly, their actions aimed to sabotage the investigation.
The arrests occurred shortly after protesting doctors returned from a failed attempt to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who declined their request to live-stream the meeting.
Additionally, the CBI has been questioning Sandip Ghosh over suspected financial irregularities linked to the medical college. Both Ghosh and the SHO are accused of delaying the filing of the FIR in the trainee doctor’s rape and murder case.
The incident took place on August 9, when the trainee doctor was raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, identified through CCTV footage after the discovery of the victim’s body. While the CBI conducted a polygraph test on Roy, they were unable to perform a narco-analysis test as he did not provide the required legal consent.
The CBI took over the investigation following an order from the Calcutta High Court, transferring the case from the Kolkata Police.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at RG Kar Medical College, reportedly visited the Sonagachi red light district on the night of August 8, where he consumed alcohol and visited two brothels consecutively, sources revealed. He later returned to the hospital after midnight. Roy arrested after being caught on CCTV footage entering and leaving the seminar hall where the trainee doctor found murdered.
The CBI also interrogated Anup Dutta, an assistant sub-inspector and member of the city police welfare board. His close ties with Sanjay Roy raised suspicions, leading CBI officers to explore how Roy had gained free access to police barracks, where he stayed, and unrestricted movement within the RG Kar Medical College premises.
Earlier today, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declined the protesting doctors’ request for live-streaming their meeting, citing the ongoing Supreme Court proceedings related to the RG Kar Medical College case.
Ms. Banerjee stated,
“I am requesting, please come and talk as you had requested for today’s meeting. At least come and have tea with me. Why are you disrespecting me? I keep waiting, but it seems you don’t want to meet. Forget politics for now… I will sign the minutes of the meeting, but there will be no live-streaming. It can happen only after Supreme Court permission,”
