Rahees lives in the Sarai Rehman area of Aligarh, which is known to be a working-class neighborhood. On March 18, he received a letter from the Income Tax Department that completely confused and scared him.
The notice mentioned that he had to pay Rs 7.79 crore and respond to the notice by March 28.
He said that he had no idea what the notice was about, so he immediately took help from his friends to understand what was written in the official letter.
While talking to the media, Mohammed Rahees shared his helplessness and said,
“I was advised to consult an income tax lawyer, who told me to gather my bank account records before he could draft a response.”
Rahees is a simple man who earns only around Rs 400 per day by selling juice and cold drinks. His small income is used to take care of his entire family, including his elderly parents who are not well.
This sudden and unexpected notice has deeply disturbed his mental and physical health.
He said,
“The shock of this notice has triggered severe anxiety, and my blood pressure has shot up. I don’t know how to deal with this crisis.”
He also added that the situation has affected his family badly. His mother, who already suffers from depression, is now even more unwell due to the fear and uncertainty caused by the notice.
This unusual case of a poor juice seller receiving such a massive tax demand has raised serious questions. People in the area are surprised and wondering how a man with such a small income could be linked to such a large tax liability.
Rahees and his supporters believe that this might be a case of mistaken identity or fraud, and they are hoping that the matter will be properly investigated and resolved soon.
