Delhi Red Fort Blast : Jasir Bilal Wani Sent to 10-Day NIA Custody

NEW DELHI: In the ongoing Red Fort blast conspiracy investigation, a Special Court at Delhi’s Patiala House on Tuesday remanded Jasir Bilal Wani to 10 days’ custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Wani, arrested in Srinagar on November 17, is described by investigators as an “active co-conspirator” in the terror plot that culminated in the deadly November 10 explosion near the historic monument.

What NIA Alleges

According to the NIA, Wani allegedly provided technical expertise to support the operational planning of the attack. The agency claims he was involved in:

  • Modifying drones for potential use in terror activities
  • Exploring ways to fabricate rockets
  • Coordinating closely with Umar un Nabi, who investigators identify as the alleged suicide bomber

Wani was produced before Principal District and Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna, who approved the investigative agency’s request for custodial interrogation. The NIA has termed him a “critical link” in the broader conspiracy.

Earlier Arrest

Just a day earlier, on November 16, a Delhi Court had remanded Amir Rashid Ali, another alleged conspirator, to 10 days of NIA custody. Ali, a resident of Samboora in Pampore, was arrested in Delhi for his alleged role in facilitating the vehicle used as the car-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED).

Key allegations against Ali include:

  • Helping procure the vehicle that was later turned into the explosive-laden car
  • Registering the car in his own name
  • Conspiring with Umar un Nabi to execute the attack
  • Traveling to Delhi last year in connection with the procurement of the vehicle

The blast on November 10 killed 13 people and injured several others.

Investigators state that forensic examination has confirmed that the deceased driver of the explosive-laden car was Umar un Nabi, an assistant professor in the General Medicine Department at Al Falah University, Faridabad. Another vehicle linked to him has also been seized and is currently undergoing forensic inspection.

Ongoing Investigation

The NIA has so far:

  • Examined 73 witnesses, including injured survivors
  • Seized multiple vehicles allegedly connected to the conspiracy
  • Coordinated operations with:
    • Delhi Police
    • Jammu & Kashmir Police
    • Haryana Police
    • Uttar Pradesh Police
    • Other central agencies

The case is registered as RC-21/2025/NIA/DLI, and investigators say multiple leads are being pursued to uncover the broader network behind the Red Fort blast.

Background

A powerful explosion took place near the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi on the evening of November 10, 2025, killing at least eight people and injuring more than twenty others.

The blast occurred around 6:52 pm when a white Hyundai i20 car stopped at a traffic signal near Gate 1 of the metro station.

The explosion set the car ablaze and damaged several nearby vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, while shattering windows in the busy area near Chandni Chowk and the Red Fort. The incident caused panic among locals and tourists in one of Delhi’s most crowded zones.

According to officials, the car was registered in Gurugram and had changed ownership multiple times, prompting police to detain the former owner for questioning.

Investigating agencies suspect the involvement of a terror module and have invoked provisions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosives Act.

Home Minister Amit Shah called a high-level security meeting soon after the blast, and the Red Fort area, including the metro station, was sealed off for investigation.

Earlier, after the incident, in a briefing following the explosion, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that a Hyundai i20 car had exploded at the Subhash Marg traffic signal. He stated that top agencies are investigating the incident “taking all possibilities into account,” and assured that the findings will be made public.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also assessed the situation and conferred with Home Minister Shah.

PM Modi mentioned in a post on X,

“Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover as soon as possible. Those affected are being assisted by authorities,”
