A Delhi court criticised the police for failing to file key reports in the rape case of a four-year-old girl who suffered severe injuries. The court ordered immediate Rs 5 lakh interim compensation, calling the child’s suffering “beyond imagination.”

New Delhi: The Delhi court’s strong remarks have once again brought attention to the issue of police negligence in cases involving sexual crimes against children. In several past incidents, courts across India have expressed concern that delays and carelessness by investigating officers directly affect justice for survivors.
This case, involving a four-year-old child, reflects the same problem, as the police failed to file the necessary victim impact report and did not appear before the judge despite being informed in advance.
The court made it clear that such behaviour cannot be tolerated, especially in a case where the survivor is battling severe medical complications. According to the court’s observations, the child has suffered life-changing injuries.
Doctors have informed that her genital injuries were so severe that both natural passages were torn. Due to this, she had to stay in the hospital for more than two weeks. Even after discharge, she has not recovered enough to pass urine or stool naturally.
Pipes have been inserted through the side of her abdomen to help her. Her treatment will continue for nearly a year, and doctors are still not sure whether her private parts will heal completely.
Such seriousness made the court extremely concerned when it noticed that the police had not even submitted the basic documents needed for determining compensation.
The court recorded the conduct of the officers and sent the matter to the Deputy Commissioner of Police for necessary action. This step indicates that the court expects administrative accountability, not just apologies.

Interim compensation is meant to provide immediate financial support to survivors and their families at a time when they face emotional trauma, medical expenses, and other challenges.
In this case, the judge felt the need to act quickly and not delay the child’s relief any further. After listening to the child’s father, the court ordered that ₹5 lakh be released immediately through the Delhi State Legal Services Authority.
The court also made it clear that the interim compensation is only temporary and will be adjusted later when the final compensation is decided after the trial.
This ensures that the child will receive further financial assistance based on the full impact of the crime on her physical and emotional health.

This case underscores the judiciary’s role as a protector of children’s rights and highlights the gaps in police functioning that need urgent correction.
It also raises larger questions: Why are investigating officers failing to follow basic procedures in such critical cases? What mechanisms are needed to ensure discipline and accountability in the police force? And how can the system better support survivors who are too young to understand the violence inflicted upon them?
