A Delhi court will announce Sajjan Kumar’s sentencing on February 25 for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, with a complainant seeking the death penalty due to his alleged instigation of violence.

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday reserved its order on the quantum of sentence for former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The verdict will be announced on February 25.

During the hearing, a complainant whose husband and son were killed by a mob allegedly instigated by Sajjan Kumar urged the court to award him the death penalty.

“The accused, being the leader of the mobs, instigated others to commit a genocide and crime against humanity and cold-blooded murders, and he deserves nothing less than capital punishment,”

said senior advocate H S Phoolka, representing the complainant.

The case pertains to the mass killings of Sikhs in 1984, following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Kumar, a former Congress MP, has been accused of orchestrating violence against the Sikh community.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja has directed Kumar’s counsel to file a written submission within two days.

Kumar was convicted in December 2018 in another 1984 riots case, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the killing of five Sikhs in Delhi’s Raj Nagar area.

With the sentence hearing set for February 25, all eyes are on the court’s decision regarding one of the most high-profile cases linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
