Delhi Court Orders Tihar Jail to Provide Electric Kettle, Table, and Chair to Kejriwal

Today (3rd April) Delhi court instructs Tihar jail to furnish electric kettle, table, and chair to Kejriwal citing medical reasons. Kejriwal’s lawyer sought these amenities, stating his client’s health needs. Additionally, the judge directed jail authorities to allow Kejriwal’s counsel access to the jail manual. The AAP leader faces accusations from the ED regarding his alleged involvement in the Delhi liquor scam.

NEW DELHI: Today (3rd April): Delhi Court Orders Tihar Jail to Provide Electric Kettle for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Health Needs, Along with Table and Chair for Reading.

On April 1, the court extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody till April 15 in the money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja issued the orders in response to a plea filed by Kejriwal’s attorney. The lawyer asserted that the Aam Aadmi Party leader needed an electric kettle to heat water and make tea.

The application asserted,

“However, the prison strictly follows the Jail Rules regarding the provision of tea.”

The lawyer mentioned that when the judge remanded Kejriwal to jail on April 1, an application submitted requesting a chair and table for him, but no instructions given.

The judge stated,

“Considering the medical condition of the accused, the request for the electric kettle is granted… Acknowledging the necessity of a table and chair for the applicant’s authorized book reading, as already permitted, the respective Jail Superintendent is instructed to furnish a chair and table to the accused, adhering to the Jail Manual.”

The judge also ordered the jail superintendent to allow Kejriwal’s authorized counsel to provide him with a copy of the jail manual.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleged that the AAP leader was part of the “complete conspiracy regarding the Delhi liquor scam, including drafting and implementing the policy, favoring and benefiting specific parties, receiving kickbacks, and ultimately utilizing some of the proceeds of crime generated from the scheduled offense in the election campaign for the Goa Assembly elections.
