Delhi Court Grants Anticipatory Bail to Drishyam 2 Producer Kumar Mangat Pathak in Rs 4.3 Crore Chinese Rights Fraud Case

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Tuesday gave big relief to Bollywood film producer Kumar Mangat Pathak by granting him anticipatory bail in a case involving allegations of cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy over the Chinese distribution rights of the hit movie Drishyam 2.

The case is being handled by the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Saurabh Pratap Singh Laler of the Patiala House Courts.

The judge noted that the payment of Rs 75 lakh was not made to Pathak personally and that taking him into police custody for questioning was not absolutely necessary.

The court said,

“It is directed that in the event of arrest, the applicant Kumar Mangat Pathak shall be released on bail on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 1,00,000 with one sureties of the like amount to the satisfaction of the Arresting Officer/SHO/IO.”

The court also directed that Pathak must fully cooperate with the ongoing police investigation.

This case began after businessman Rajinder Kumar Goel filed a complaint claiming that he was cheated into investing Rs 4.3 crore for exclusive rights to release Drishyam 2 in Chinese language in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Goel alleged that an intermediary named Bharat Sevak pretended to be an authorised representative of Pathak’s company, Panorama Studios, and used fake documents along with false promises to secure the deal.

He further alleged that Rs 75 lakh from Sevak’s company was sent to Panorama Studios.

On his part, Pathak clarified that no payment was made to him personally. He explained that the Rs 75 lakh amount was credited to Panorama Studios’ account for a completely different film project.

Pathak also said that his company had replied to Goel’s email dated November 14, 2024, informing him that the documents signed in the deal were forged.

After going through the case details, Judge Laler concluded that Pathak had provided enough grounds to be granted anticipatory bail.
