According to police sources, Rajesh Sakriya, a 41-year-old man from Rajkot in Gujarat, had originally planned to attack the Chief Minister with a knife.
Police sources revealed that Sakriya had confessed he attacked Ms Gupta on August 20 because she had allegedly ignored his repeated requests to stop removing stray dogs from Delhi.
Before reaching the CM’s residence, Sakriya even visited the Supreme Court. The visit took place soon after the court ordered authorities to capture stray dogs from Delhi and nearby areas and shift them to shelters away from residential colonies.
However, sources said that when Sakriya saw the strict security at the Supreme Court, he gave up his idea of creating trouble there.
Instead, he left for Shalimar Bagh, where the Chief Minister’s residence is located. Later, he also went to her Civil Lines office with a knife. But after noticing the strong security presence during the public hearing, he threw away the knife.
It was then that Sakriya resorted to physical assault. During the Jan Sunwai (public hearing), he allegedly slapped Ms Gupta, pushed her, and pulled her hair in front of others.
Earlier, CM Rekha Gupta had spoken about the problem of stray dog attacks in Delhi, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
She had said:
“This problem has taken a formidable form and is now standing before Delhi, and providing a solution is very important. We will prepare a proper plan on this issue.”
Meanwhile, in a fresh development, Delhi Police have arrested a second accused linked to this attack. On Sunday, police detained Tahseen Syed, a close friend of Rajesh Sakriya.
Officials confirmed that Syed had been brought from Rajkot to Delhi on Friday night for further questioning. He was made to confront Sakriya face-to-face to verify the facts. After this, he was formally taken into custody on Sunday.
Police said that Syed had been in regular touch with Sakriya and had even sent him money before the attack. In addition, Sakriya had allegedly sent Syed a video clip of Ms Gupta’s Shalimar Bagh residence as part of the planning.
PREVIOUSLY IN DELHI COURT
A Delhi court on Aug 20 sent Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s alleged attacker, Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, to five days police remand.
The 41-year-old Rajkot resident was produced before the Duty Metropolitan Magistrate at midnight.
During this remand period, Delhi Police may take Sakariya to Rajkot. Investigators may also recreate the crime scene at the Chief Minister’s Civil Lines residence.
Police officials said they will check who Sakariya met and spoke to after arriving in Delhi. His mobile phone has been sent for forensic tests to examine whether a bigger conspiracy is behind the assault.
The shocking incident happened during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at the CM’s residence earlier in the day. Officials said that Sakariya first gave some papers to the Chief Minister, then suddenly started shouting and yelling before striking her. He was quickly overpowered and arrested by security staff.
Police sources revealed that one of Sakariya’s relatives is in jail and he had come with a petition demanding their release, which is still pending in court.
His family members also shared details about his background. Eyewitnesses claimed that people at the event thrashed him before police took him away.
Initial reports had claimed that the CM was slapped.
However, Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva clarified the situation. He denied those reports, saying that the attacker tried to pull the Chief Minister by the hand, and in the scuffle,
“Her head may have hit a corner.”
Doctors later confirmed that the CM is out of danger but in shock. Sachdeva praised her spirit, saying,
“She remains determined to continue her daily work and Jan Sunwai sessions,”
and added that she is a
“Strong woman with a clear commitment to Delhi.”
After the incident, the CM herself gave her first response on social media.
She said,
“The attack on me during this morning’s public hearing was not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi and work for the welfare of the people.”
Officials further quoted her as saying that the programme will not stop and
“It had not broken her spirit.”
