Defamation Case | Delhi court Issues Notice to AAP Leader Saurabh Bhardwaj

A Delhi court issued a notice to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bhardwaj in connection with a defamation complaint. The case concerns to alleged defamatory remarks made by Bhardwaj, urging the complainant to seek legal action. The court sought Bhardwaj’s response to the allegations.

New Delhi: A Delhi court served a notice to AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj in a criminal defamation case initiated by a BJP worker.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Neha Mittal issued the notice on December 23, requiring Bhardwaj to respond to the complaint filed by Suraj Bhan Chauhan by January 9, 2025. In his complaint, Chauhan alleged that Bhardwaj defamed him in 2018 by falsely asserting during a press conference that an FIR had been filed against him.

The judge also provided a final opportunity for the complainant to submit a copy of a previous complaint related to the same matter, which had been dismissed by another court.

Saurabh Bharadwaj is a prominent figure in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in India. He has acted as the party’s spokesperson and has engaged in numerous media interactions. Bharadwaj is well-known for his active participation in Delhi’s political landscape and has been involved in various initiatives aimed at enhancing governance in the city.

He serves as a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, representing the Greater Kailash constituency.

Bharadwaj is recognized for his eloquent speeches and firm positions on issues such as corruption, governance, and accountability. He advocates for reforms in education and healthcare, aligning with AAP’s fundamental policies.

His political journey includes involvement in several controversies and debates, frequently challenging the policies of rival parties, especially the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress.

In India, defamation is both a civil and criminal offense. Under Section 499 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), defamation is punishable with imprisonment for up to two years or a fine, or both. Civil defamation, on the other hand, can lead to compensation for damages caused to the reputation of the person.
