A special court adjourned the defamation case against Rahul Gandhi to March 6 due to the complainant’s lawyer’s absence, stemming from a remark made during the 2018 Karnataka elections.
A special MP/MLA court on Monday adjourned the hearing in a defamation case against Leader of Opposition and Rae Bareli MP Rahul Gandhi to March 6 after the complainant’s lawyer failed to appear.
Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer Kashi Prasad Shukla stated that the complainant was cross-examined on February 11, and Monday was scheduled for further proceedings. However, as the complainant’s lawyer, Santosh Kumar Pandey, did not appear in court, the hearing was deferred to March 6.

The case was filed over an alleged objectionable remark made by Rahul Gandhi about Home Minister Amit Shah during the 2018 Karnataka assembly elections. Following this, local BJP politician Pradeep Mishra from Hanumanganj, under the Kotwali Dehat police station, lodged a complaint in 2018, claiming the remark hurt his sentiments.
The case has seen multiple proceedings over the past five years, but Gandhi reportedly failed to appear in court on several occasions.
- December 2023: Rahul Gandhi appeared in court after a warrant was issued against him.
- February 2024: The Congress leader complied with the summons, and the special magistrate granted him bail on two sureties of Rs 25,000 each.
- July 26, 2024: After several postponements, Gandhi finally recorded his statement in the case.

With the next hearing now set for March 6, the case continues to remain a key legal battle involving the Congress leader.
