Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, Pappu Yadav, was remanded to two-day judicial custody by a Patna court after arrest in a 1995 case. The ACJM said his bail plea will be heard Monday, and he will stay for treatment there.

PATNA: Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, widely known as Pappu Yadav, was placed in judicial custody for two days by a Patna court following his arrest related to a case from 1995.

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court stated that Yadav’s bail request will be considered on Monday, and he will remain at Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment in the interim.

Yadav was taken into custody on Friday night at his Mandiri residence after a warrant was issued against him by the MP/MLA court pertaining to a case filed under Section 467 (forgery of documents) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Representing the Purnea Lok Sabha constituency, Yadav initially resisted accompanying the police, asserting that they had a warrant for property attachment, not for his arrest. Nevertheless, he was eventually taken into custody.

Advocate Shivnandan Bharti, who represented Yadav in court, stated,

“He has been taken into judicial custody. However, instead of being sent to jail, it was ordered that he be kept at PMCH for treatment because his health is not good.”

The advocate asserted that Yadav had willingly offered to surrender but claimed that a “false case has been filed against him for obstructing the police’s work.”

He added,

“His bail was cancelled in July 2025. A non-bailable warrant has been out for him since then. If the police wanted, they could have arrested him that very day, but they didn’t. They were waiting for an opportunity, and they arrested him now because he was raising critical issues in Bihar,”

The court had previously issued an arrest warrant for the MP, and a confiscation order was issued three days ago after he failed to appear in court.

Before his arrest, Pappu Yadav made a bold statement on Twitter, saying,

“Pappu Yadav will neither bow nor remain silent. They can have me killed, but I will expose the actions of the dishonest!”

He also alleged that police arrived at his home in plain clothes, acting aggressively, which led him to fear for his safety.

Patna SSP Kartikeya Sharma confirmed that a police team had gone to Yadav’s residence to execute the warrant issued by the MP/MLA court.

SSP Sharma stated,

“A warrant has been issued against the MP by the MP/MLA court here in connection with a 1995 case lodged under Section 467 (forgery of documents) of the IPC. The police team has gone to his house to produce him before the court tomorrow,”

Patna SP City Bhanu Pratap Singh added,

“This is a 1995 case that was under the old IPC, now replaced by the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), involving sections 419, 420, 468, 448, 506, and 120B. The arrest is being made under these sections. This case is related to Gardanibagh police station. The trial was ongoing in court, and the MP was supposed to appear, but he did not appear on the scheduled date. Therefore, he is being arrested.”

Pappu Yadav, the MP from Purnea, was earlier arrested from his Mandiri residence in Patna amidst a significant police presence and dramatic scenes. Reports indicate that the arrest stems from a 31-year-old case recorded at Gardanibagh police station, where Yadav is accused of fraudulently renting a house and using it as his office without disclosing the actual purpose to the landlord, Vinod Bihari Lal.

In 1995, the case was registered based on the complaint and falls under sections 419, 420, 468, 448, 506, and 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). According to reports, the case had been pending in court, with MP Pappu Yadav repeatedly failing to appear despite multiple summons and warrants. Police raided his residence, encountering resistance from Yadav and his supporters.

Before his arrest, Yadav asserted that he was being targeted for his criticism of the state government, particularly regarding the recent death of a NEET aspirant.

Adding that he would appear before the court on Saturday, he claimed,

“They are misbehaving with my supporters and me. Moreover, they failed to furnish an arrest warrant when I asked for the same. All that they could produce was a warrant to attach my property,”

He asserted,

“I have doubts that these people might have killed me. I will go straight to the Court. I will not go to the police station. If they want, they can house arrest me. The Court has called me tomorrow. Police reached here in civil uniform like criminals. I thought they had come to kill me. Is this a criminal’s house?… There was a case registered around 35 years ago, and the police came to arrest me in connection with that case,”

He further mentioned,

“The court had summoned me regarding a 35-year-old case. Yesterday, the court called me, and today the Lok Sabha session ended at 4 PM, so I came here to respect the court and attend as required. I am supposed to go to the court tomorrow, but the way the police behaved today was very dangerous and inappropriate.”
