A team of polygraph specialists from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Delhi conducted a test on Sanjay Roy, the accused in the Kolkata rape and murder case, on Sunday. During the CBI interrogation, Roy disclosed crucial details about his movements and actions on the night of the crime.

In the absence of an official statement from the CBI regarding the polygraph test results conducted on August 25 on Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, conflicting reports have surfaced from different sources.

Allegedly informed CBI interrogators that the victim was already deceased when he first saw her on that fateful night. However, Roy admitted to sexually assaulting and strangling the victim.

A team of polygraph specialists from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi conducted the test.

In one account, Roy reportedly confessed that on the night of August 8, he and a friend went to RG Kar Hospital to check on the health of his friend’s brother. After leaving the hospital, they consumed alcohol and visited red-light areas in Kolkata, including Sonagachi and Chetla. Roy allegedly admitted to molesting a woman on the way to Chetla, an incident captured on surveillance cameras. He stated that while his friend had sex with a woman in Chetla, he did not. Instead, he made a video call to his girlfriend and asked her to send him nude photos, which she did.

Roy recounted the sequence of events on the night of August 8,

  • Roy and a friend arrived at RG Kar Hospital to check on the health of the friend’s brother, who was hospitalized.
  • At 11:15 PM, they left the hospital and decided to drink alcohol, purchasing it and consuming it on the street.
  • They then headed to Sonagachi, a well-known red-light district in north Kolkata.
  • Unsuccessful there, they decided to visit another red-light area in South Kolkata, Chetla.
  • En route to Chetla, they molested a woman on the street.
  • While in Chetla, Roy’s friend engaged in sexual activity with a woman, while Roy remained outside, talking to his girlfriend via video call and requesting nude photos, which she sent.
  • The duo then returned to RG Kar Hospital. Roy went to the trauma center on the fourth floor.
  • At 4:03 AM, CCTV footage captured Roy in the corridor near the seminar hall on the third floor.
  • Roy entered the seminar hall, where the victim was sleeping, and strangled her.
  • After sexually assaulting the victim, Roy left the scene and went to the home of Anupam Dutta, a Kolkata Police officer.

CCTV footage reportedly shows Roy returning to RG Kar Hospital, entering the corridor near the seminar hall on the third floor at 4:03 a.m. During the polygraph test, he allegedly confessed that the victim was asleep when he entered the seminar hall, where he sexually assaulted and strangled her. After the crime, he went to his friend, ASI Anupam Dutta’s house.

In a conflicting account, Roy allegedly claimed that the victim was already dead when he arrived at the seminar hall. Reports suggest that he gave “false and unconvincing” answers when questioned about his recent claims of innocence, appearing “unnerved and anxious” during the two-hour interrogation. Despite citing multiple “alibis,” investigators reportedly confronted him with evidence, including forensic findings that placed him at the crime scene during the rape and murder.

Roy’s counsel, Kabita Sarkar, accused the CBI of violating National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines by conducting the polygraph test without the presence of a defense lawyer.

She stated,

“The CBI did not inform us when the test would be conducted. They should have notified us so we could be present,”

The CBI sought court approval to conduct polygraph tests on seven individuals, including Roy and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college. Although polygraph results are not admissible as evidence during the trial, the findings may guide the agency’s further investigation. Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after the body of the 31-year-old doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. CCTV footage and a Bluetooth device found near the body led to Roy’s arrest.

The CBI previously informed the Supreme Court that by the time they took over the investigation, the crime scene had been altered, suggesting that local police may have attempted to cover up the rape and murder of the postgraduate doctor. The doctor’s body, bearing severe injury marks, discovered in the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department on the morning of August 9.

CBI sources indicated that Roy’s and his friend’s presence at all these locations was confirmed through their call data records (CDRs).

Investigators also reportedly discovered a significant amount of pornographic material on Roy’s mobile phone, including videos depicting incestuous acts between siblings. This led the CBI to conduct a psychological evaluation of Roy, who also subjected to a lie detector test.

Roy, 33, apprehended by Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. A Bluetooth device found near the body led to Roy’s arrest, and CCTV footage placed him on the third floor of the hospital where the seminar hall is located.

It has also been alleged that Roy had close ties with several senior Kolkata Police officers. The CBI informed the Supreme Court that by the time they assumed control of the investigation, the crime scene had been altered, suggesting a potential cover-up by local police to conceal the rape and murder.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from Kolkata Police to the CBI.
