Chief Justice Chandrachud Advocates for Transparent Legal System on Gandhi Jayanti

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, emphasized the importance of not only maintaining a clean physical environment but also striving for a

“cleaner, more transparent, and accountable legal system.”

His message, resonating with the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, was read out during the celebrations held at the Supreme Court premises in New Delhi.

The Chief Justice, who was out of Delhi at the time, conveyed,

“On this special occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, we commemorate the birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, whose principles of non-violence, truth, and self-discipline continue to inspire us in our pursuit of justice.”

He also paid tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri, another stalwart leader, emphasizing his vision for a strong and self-reliant India.

Highlighting the significance of cleanliness, CJI Chandrachud reiterated,

“Cleanliness, as Mahatma Gandhi emphasized, is not just a physical act but a reflection of our inner state.”

He further urged members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to use this occasion as a reminder of their commitment to justice, integrity, and upholding the values of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court Bar Association marked the day by celebrating the birth anniversaries of both Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Distinguished Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, Rajesh Bindal, and K V Vishwanathan were present during the celebrations. Justice Sanjeev Khanna, who chaired the event, underscored the relevance of Gandhian philosophy, quoting Mahatma Gandhi,

“Facts mean truth, and once we adhere to truth, the law comes to our aid naturally.”

He also described Lal Bahadur Shastri as a true Gandhian with selfless devotion to the country.

Interestingly, CJI Chandrachud celebrated Gandhi Jayanti at Tavistock Square in London, where he remarked,

“Mahatma Gandhi is a name that calls for universal peace, a name that inspires hope that we shall make our world a better place to live than it was before.”
