The CBI is committed to a supplementary chargesheet in the rape and murder investigation of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College, while the victim’s parents urge thorough accountability and express skepticism regarding the progress.

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reiterated its commitment to filing a supplementary chargesheet in the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. This update was shared at the Sealdah Civil & Criminal Court in Kolkata on Monday.
The CBI also emphasized the importance of a SIM card belonging to Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge (OC) of the Tala police station, stating that it is the “most critical part” of the investigation. This was in response to a plea for its return, which the agency denied, citing its significance as evidence.
This development follows growing concerns from the victim’s parents regarding the CBI’s handling of the case. Although the prime accused, Sanjay Roy, has already been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, the victim’s parents insist that others were involved and have demanded a thorough investigation. They also criticized the CBI for not classifying the case as “rarest of the rare,” which prevented Roy from receiving the death penalty.
The CBI faced scrutiny after failing to file a chargesheet against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, and Abhijit Mondal, leading to their bail on December 13 last year. The victim’s parents remain skeptical of the investigation’s progress.
On February 20, the victim’s family’s counsel informed the Sealdah court that the CBI had not provided updates on the case as required. In response, the court directed the agency to submit a progress report. On Monday, the CBI informed the court that an inquiry is underway to determine whether any evidence was tampered with, and the findings will be included in the supplementary chargesheet.
On January 20, when Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment, the CBI assured the court that its investigation was ongoing, promising to file a supplementary chargesheet. However, this has done little to restore confidence in the victim’s parents, who continue to push for justice and accountability.
