A prominent BJP leader initiated legal action against Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi, alleging defamation. The lawsuit follows contentious remarks made during recent political discourse. This development highlights the escalating tensions within India’s political landscape. Legal experts anticipate a protracted legal battle as both sides prepare their statements and defences.
Praveen Shankar Kapoor, the media head for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi, initiated a criminal defamation lawsuit against Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi government minister Atishi. This legal action, in response to their accusations suggesting that the BJP propositioned Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, offering them between Rs. 20-30 crores each to switch allegiances.
The case presented before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tanya Bamniyal, who scheduled the proceedings for pre-summoning evidence on May 4.
Kapoor contended that the AAP consistently claimed, particularly when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) engaged with AAP leaders, that the BJP endeavouring to lure AAP MLAs claims Kapoor asserts unsubstantiated and misleading.

He argued,
“Every time the ED approached an AAP leader, they would throw up these baseless allegations that the BJP was attempting to poach AAP MLAs, yet they never provided any evidence to support such claims,”
He further highlighted that these allegations seem strategically timed to shift focus from the controversies surrounding the Delhi excise policy case.
Kapoor’s legal plea pointed to specific instances of these claims, including a post by Kejriwal on X (formerly Twitter) dated January 27, 2024, and a press conference by Atishi on April 2, 2024. In these communications, Kejriwal alleged that the BJP approached 7 AAP MLAs, offering Rs. 25 crores to each to destabilize the Delhi government.
Kapoor also noted that Atishi echoed these allegations just as her involvement in the excise policy case becoming a focal point, suggesting a tactic to deflect attention from the “real issue.”
This legal move is indicative of the intensifying confrontations and disagreements between the BJP and officials from other political parties. The case is poised to further stir the political dynamics, as it underscores the fraught and often contentious interactions among India’s major political entities.
The recent defamation lawsuit filed by a senior BJP leader against Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi just the latest chapter in a series of contentious exchanges in Indian politics. The history between these parties is marked by heated rhetoric and legal confrontations, reflecting the intense polarization within the political landscape.
Arvind Kejriwal, as the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), been a vocal critic of the BJP, particularly on issues such as governance, corruption, and social policies. These criticisms have often led to public clashes and verbal sparring between Kejriwal and BJP leaders. In the past, such confrontations have sometimes escalated into legal battles, with defamation suits being filed by both sides. These legal actions not only reflect the personal animosity between key figures but also highlight the strategic use of legal mechanisms to gain political leverage and shape public opinion.
Kejriwal himself involved in multiple defamation cases, both as a plaintiff and a defendant. Notably, he has been sued by several political figures including Arun Jaitley, the late former Finance Minister of India, over allegations of financial irregularities in the Delhi and District Cricket Association.

Atishi, a prominent AAP leader known for her advocacy on education and women’s issues, has also been a target of political attacks and legal threats. Her inclusion in this defamation suit highlights the complex dynamics and interconnectedness of political rivalries in India’s democratic arena. The current lawsuit adds another layer of complexity to an already charged political environment, with supporters of each party closely watching the developments. The legal process will likely unfold over an extended period, with arguments, counterclaims, and media narratives shaping public perceptions and political outcomes.
Ultimately, this legal battle is not just about defamation allegations but also about power dynamics, ideological clashes, and the ongoing struggle for dominance in Indian politics. As the case progresses, it will continue to be a focal point for debates on freedom of speech, political accountability, and the role of the judiciary in mediating political disputes.
