Famous author and political commentator Mrityunjay Sharma has been sent a Rs 5 crore defamation notice by Sadhu Yadav, the brother-in-law of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and a former Member of Parliament.
This legal notice was sent on June 18 through a law firm on behalf of Sadhu Yadav. According to the notice, Yadav has raised objections against some claims made in Mrityunjay Sharma’s book ‘Broken Promises’ and some recent podcast interviews.
The notice has demanded that Sharma issue a public apology and remove certain references from both the book and the interviews.
Speaking to The Indian Express on Saturday, Mrityunjay Sharma clearly said that everything written in his book is backed by facts.
He strongly stated,
“I’m definitely not going to apologise for something that’s based on facts and evidence. If they are not ashamed of doing these things, why should I be ashamed of writing about them?”
He also explained that he had done proper research before writing the book.
“Every line is referenced. There’s no imagination or speculation involved,”
-he added.
Further sharing the timeline, Sharma said,
“Two days ago, I received the legal notice. It asked me to apologise or face hefty fines. I’ve decided to make the entire matter public, because people should know what kind of person he is.”
After receiving the notice, Sharma posted it publicly on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), along with his official response.
Sharma said that the notice mainly objected to three references in the book:
- The Shilpi-Gautam murder case
- A looting incident during Rohini Acharya’s wedding
- A violent protest episode outside Bihar Bhavan in Delhi
These references, according to Yadav, were damaging to his reputation.
However, Sharma is confident in his stand. Known for his widely followed political podcasts, he said he is fully prepared to face legal proceedings.
“If they move to court, I will fight it. There’s no question of a private settlement or backdoor apology. I have a huge volume of source material to prove every line I’ve written,”
-Sharma affirmed.
When asked whether Sadhu Yadav had tried to contact him personally, Sharma revealed,
“He did call me a couple of months ago, but it wasn’t threatening in nature. That’s why I didn’t mention it in my original post. But yes, as a precautionary note, I mentioned that a call was received.”
