BIHAR: A very strange and surprising case has come to light from Bettiah district in Bihar, where a horse was caught carrying illegal liquor. The police caught this horse during patrolling duty near a bank in Muliyal area of Nautan block on Tuesday morning. This incident has shocked not only the locals but also the police force.
“When the police patrol team was patrolling the area, they got suspicious after seeing a huge quantity of goods on a horse.”
As police neared the spot, those who were transporting the liquor ran away in fear, leaving the horse behind.
The police checked the sacks tied on the horse and discovered four full cartons of foreign-made liquor.
“Seeing the police coming, the liquor smugglers left the horse with liquor and escaped from the spot.”
Station House Officer (SHO) Rajesh Kumar confirmed this unusual incident and said the police had seized the horse along with the liquor. The investigation has started to find out who owns the horse and who was using it to smuggle liquor.
“Four cartons of foreign liquor were recovered from the sack loaded on horseback.”
This new method of liquor smuggling using an animal has left the police shocked. It shows that smugglers are now using unusual and clever tricks to avoid being caught.
“This unique smuggling modus operandi has also surprised the police.”
Legally, this case is very serious. It violates the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016, which bans the sale, transport, and possession of liquor in the state.
The people involved in this crime can face non-bailable charges, large fines, and jail time up to 10 years, depending on the details.
Under Section 30 and 56 of the Bihar Prohibition Act, even aiding or abetting the smuggling activity, including the use of animals or property for transportation, can lead to seizure of property and criminal charges. The fact that the accused ran away doesn’t protect them from the law, as police can still track them through the horse’s ownership, CCTV footage, or other evidence.
But this is not just a liquor smuggling case. There is also a possible violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Under this Act, using an animal like a horse for illegal and harsh work, such as smuggling heavy goods like liquor cartons, may be seen as cruel treatment. If proven, it can lead to fines, seizure of the animal, and even imprisonment for those responsible.
Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act clearly states that overloading or using animals for unnecessary pain or suffering is punishable. In this case, the smugglers not only broke liquor laws but may have also committed animal cruelty by using the horse as a smuggling tool, potentially risking its health and life.
“Despite the strictness of the administration, the changing modus operandi of liquor smugglers shows that there is a dire need for monitoring and strict action to stop illegal trade.”
