Panaji: On Aug 26: A Goa court on Monday revoked the bail of Amit Palekar, the state unit chief of the Aam Aadmi Party, in connection with the 2023 Banastarim accident case that resulted in the deaths of three individuals.

The incident occurred on August 6, 2023, when a speeding Mercedes collided with multiple vehicles on the Banastarim bridge, resulting in three fatalities. The Crime Branch arrested Palekar on allegations of tampering with evidence and attempting to substitute a decoy driver to shield the accused, Paresh Sawardekar.

The additional district court had initially granted Palekar conditional bail, but on Monday, the additional sessions court in Ponda rescinded that bail.

Last week, the Crime Branch filed an application seeking the cancellation of Palekar’s bail, alleging that he violated the bail conditions by traveling to countries other than France, which was the only destination authorized by the court.

During Friday’s hearing, Palekar’s lawyer argued that the court’s permission was for international travel and did not limit it solely to France.

On Monday, the court accepted the Crime Branch’s application and revoked Palekar’s conditional bail.

The accident occurred on the Ponda-Panaji highway, about 15 kilometers from Panaji, around 7:30 PM on August 6. The luxury vehicle struck three cars, a motorcycle, and a scooter. The accused, Paresh Sawardekar, a supermarket chain owner, was arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with charges of rash and drunk driving, among others.
