In Meerut, the special MP/MLA court (session trial) in Rampur delivered a verdict that has caught the attention of political and legal circles alike. On Saturday, the court found Samajwadi Party national general secretary Mohammad Azam Khan, along with three others, guilty in the controversial demolition of a house in 2016 in the Dungarpur case. The convicted individuals include retired circle officer Ale Hasan, former municipal president Azhar Ahmed Khan, and contractor Barkat Ali. This case has been under the legal microscope for some time, and the decision has finally been handed down, with the sentencing scheduled for March 18.

The charges laid against Azam Khan and his associates are severe, encompassing sections 425 (house trespass or assaulting a person), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of ₹50 and more), 504 (intentional insult), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These allegations paint a picture of a calculated intrusion and subsequent intimidation, marking a significant legal setback for the accused.

The case initially involved seven individuals, but the court’s recent ruling acquitted three due to insufficient evidence. The acquitted parties are Farhan Khan, Jibran, and Omendra, leaving the legal spotlight firmly on the convicted quartet. Advocate Rohtash Kumar Pandey, representing the prosecution, highlighted the court’s decision, underscoring the gravity of the offenses committed by the convicted individuals.

The backdrop of this case is a complaint filed by Ehtesham Khan, a resident of Dungarpur, back in 2019. The complainant accused the seven individuals of a series of severe crimes, including house trespass, physical assault, verbal abuse, threats of murder, and extortion. This complaint set the legal wheels in motion, leading to the recent convictions.

The trial has been closely watched, given the high-profile nature of the accused and the serious allegations involved. The final hearing and conviction took place under tight security, reflecting the case’s sensitivity and the potential for public and political reactions.

The Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) of Rampur, Seema Rana, provided a succinct summary of the court’s decision. She stated,

“the court convicted Azam Khan, Azhar Khan, Ale Hasan, and Barkat Ali on the charges of breaking into the house, assault, vandalism, abusing, and threatening to kill.”

The date for sentencing, March 18, is now set, marking the next significant date in this legal saga.

This conviction is particularly notable for Azam Khan, a prominent figure in the Samajwadi Party, who is already serving a sentence in Sitapur jail for another criminal case. The verdict adds another layer to the legal challenges facing Khan and has potential implications for his political career.

As the community and political observers await the sentencing, this case underscores the legal system’s role in addressing allegations of criminal behavior, regardless of the accused’s political affiliations or status. The Dungarpur case serves as a reminder of the legal challenges and controversies that can emerge in the intersection of politics, law, and community welfare.
