Chandigarh: Until the next hearing, Facebook must immediately suspend or block public access to three pages, a Chandigarh court has directed in a defamation suit by Congress leader Amandeep Jaintipur over AI-generated videos allegedly targeting him. The defendants have also been restrained from publishing or uploading any AI-manipulated content involving him [Amandeep Jaintipur v. Operators of the Facebook Pages].
Civil Judge (Junior Division) Kuldeep Singh passed the interim order on October 5, 2026.
The court’s warning
In granting interim relief, the court observed:
uncontrolled manipulation through Artificial Intelligence (AI) may adversely affect the health of democracy and contribute to the manufacturing of public consent.
What the plaintiff says
The plaintiff, a Congress leader from Batala, has sued the operators of the Facebook pages “Batale Di Rajneeti”, “Kachi Laan” and “Thanedar Uncle”. His counsel argued that digitally manipulated videos falsely portrayed him as a drug dealer and an anti-social element, calling this “cheap politics” that uses unchecked technology rather than legitimate criticism. These are the plaintiff’s allegations and are yet to be tested.
An interim order only
The suit has not been decided, and the court has made no finding on the merits. The defendants’ position can be placed before the court when the matter is heard next on October 22, 2026.
