This decision comes as a result of offensive comments made by Shekher against women journalists in 2018.
S Ve Shekher, a notable figure in both the Tamil Nadu political and entertainment spheres, found himself embroiled in controversy following his derogatory remarks targeted at women journalists on social media platforms. The court’s decision to incarcerate Shekher for a month, coupled with a fine of Rs 15,000, marks a pivotal moment in the fight against gender-based discrimination and abuse on the internet.

The legal proceedings against Shekher culminated in a chargesheet filed in 2019, leading to charges under Sections 504 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code. These sections specifically address “Intentional insult with intent to provoke peace” and “Word, gesture or act intended to insult a woman’s modesty,” respectively.
Despite the court’s ruling, Shekher has the opportunity to challenge the decision in the Madras High Court, provided he pays the imposed fine. This legal recourse offers Shekher a chance to seek a reversal or reduction of his sentence, showcasing the multifaceted nature of the judicial process in India.
Following the court’s decision, Shekher’s counsel successfully petitioned for the suspension of his jail sentence. This temporary reprieve underscores the legal mechanisms available to defendants, allowing them to remain out of custody while pursuing further legal challenges against their convictions.
S Ve Shekher’s political career has been as dynamic as his tenure in the entertainment industry. Elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly in 2006 on an AIADMK ticket for the Mylapore seat, Shekher’s political journey has seen several significant turns. His expulsion from the AIADMK led him to join the Congress, only to be expelled from there as well.
Eventually, Shekher found a political home in the BJP, marking his continuous engagement in Tamil Nadu‘s political landscape despite the controversies surrounding him.
