26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack | Delhi Court Allows Accused Tahawwur Rana To Speak To Family On Phone

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Thursday granted permission to 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana to have telephonic conversations with his family members, but strictly for the purpose of discussing the engagement of a private lawyer.

According to court sources, Special Judge Chander Jit Singh passed the order in an in-chamber proceeding. Currently, Rana is being represented by advocate Piyush Sachdeva from the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) as his legal aid counsel.

Before this order, the Tihar Jail authorities had opposed Rana’s application, arguing against granting such telephonic access. However, the court’s latest directive now enables him to make these limited calls to his family to coordinate legal representation.

Who is Tahawwur Hussain Rana?

Rana is allegedly a close associate of David Coleman Headley, the main conspirator of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Headley, also known as Daood Gilani, is a US citizen who played a central role in scouting locations and planning the attacks.

Rana’s extradition to India followed a legal battle in the United States. The US Supreme Court, on April 4, 2024, dismissed his review plea challenging the extradition order. He was subsequently brought to India to face trial for his alleged role in the deadly 2008 assault.

Recap of the 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attacks

On November 26, 2008, ten armed Pakistani terrorists infiltrated Mumbai through the sea route, launching coordinated attacks at multiple locations:

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station
  • Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
  • Oberoi Trident Hotel
  • Nariman House (Jewish centre)

The attacks lasted nearly 60 hours, leaving 166 people dead and hundreds injured. The incident is remembered as one of the most traumatic terrorist strikes in India’s history.
