Uttar Pradesh: On 27th May: A court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, set June 7 as the date for the next hearing in the defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Filed by the BJP Leader Vijay Mishra, the complaint revolves around alleged objectionable remarks made by Gandhi against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2018. The legal proceedings encountered a temporary halt due to Gandhi’s campaign commitments.

Gandhi’s lawyer, Kashi Prasad Shukla, submitted an application to the court, citing the Congress leader’s engagement in campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls and requesting time for him to appear before the court.
Judge Shubham Verma, presiding over the case, fixed June 7 as the upcoming date for the hearing. The plaintiff’s lawyer, Santosh Kumar Pandey, voiced concerns in court, alleging that Gandhi was evading the legal proceedings.

Notably, a warrant had been issued against Gandhi in December previously. He temporarily paused his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Amethi on February 20 to appear in court, where he was granted bail.

Background:
The defamation complaint was filed on August 4, 2018, by Vijay Mishra against Rahul Gandhi over his comments about Amit Shah during the Karnataka elections. Gandhi had accused the BJP of claiming to believe in honest and clean politics while having a party president who was an “accused” in a murder case. It is important to note that Shah was discharged by a special CBI court in Mumbai four years prior to Gandhi’s remark in a 2005 fake encounter case when he was a minister of state for home in Gujarat.
Last December, the court issued a warrant against Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case. As a result, Gandhi temporarily halted his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Amethi and appeared in court on February 20, where he was granted bail.
