CJI Chandrachud: Assisting Litigants in “Amicable Dispute Resolution” Brings Greatest Satisfaction

Today, On 29th July, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud emphasized that the greatest satisfaction for judges comes from working to eliminate barriers to justice and ensuring an independent judiciary. He highlighted that an independent judiciary is not just about being insulated from the executive and legislature but also involves individual judges being free from social and political pressures.

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud shared on Monday what brings the greatest satisfaction to judges. He recounted a touching story about a couple involved in divorce and custody proceedings at the Patiala House Court.

The husband filed for divorce, while the wife sought maintenance and custody of their children. The CJI reflected on the heart warming resolution of the case, describing it as a “happy ending” that brought fulfilment and satisfaction to all involved.

Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud recounted an instance, stating,

“I recall a case where a man had initiated a divorce at the Patiala house court, while his wife sought maintenance and child custody.”

He continued,

“However, in a turn of events during the pre-Lok Adalat session, the couple unexpectedly chose to reconcile. When I inquired further, they expressed their happiness and desire to remain together.”

Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud appeared content as he spoke about the case’s positive conclusion, remarking,

“You see, the ultimate fulfilment for us as judges comes from aiding parties in resolving their conflicts.”

Emphasizing the importance of promoting amicable solutions in legal disputes. He elaborated,

“Naturally, our duty involves settling disputes, issuing rulings, and making decisions based on the law. However, the most gratifying aspect is witnessing parties settle their differences peacefully,”

He emphasized that the opportunity to resolve legal conflicts and uphold the law is not merely a duty but a privilege that impacts lives and fortifies the judiciary’s credibility. This fulfilment is especially significant in cases where their rulings promote equity, restore rights, and enhance the legal system’s integrity, thus strengthening public confidence in judicial processes.

This sense of accomplishment stems from their ability to resolve complex legal issues and restore fairness in the system. Judges take pride in their contributions to maintaining social order and reinforcing public confidence in the legal framework, which they see as fundamental to democracy and civic harmony.
