KOLKATA: The West Bengal Medical Council announced on Wednesday(18th Sept), evening the cancellation of the medical registration of Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. The action comes amid Ghosh’s involvement in an ongoing investigation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the institution.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police also confirmed the suspension of Inspector Abhijit Mondal, who previously served as the Station House Officer (SHO) at Tala Police Station. Both Ghosh and Mondal are currently in CBI custody, facing serious allegations of tampering with evidence and obstructing the initial investigation conducted by the local police.
Sources revealed that Ghosh’s medical registration was canceled after he failed to respond to a show-cause notice issued by the West Bengal Medical Council on September 7, 2023. The council had given him three days to explain why his registration should not be revoked. However, when no reply was forthcoming, the council proceeded with the cancellation.
“Any government official or staff against whom a criminal investigation is initiated and remains in custody for over 48 hours must be suspended,”
-sources stated, explaining why Mondal’s suspension was inevitable.
Both Ghosh and Mondal are suspected of attempting to mislead the initial police investigation and are being scrutinized for obstructing justice in one of the most horrifying cases of recent times.
On Tuesday, a special court in Kolkata extended CBI custody for Ghosh and Mondal by an additional three days. According to the remand note, the CBI reported that the two had been “evasive and uncooperative” during the interrogation process.
The CBI has also unearthed some suspected mobile numbers that have come to light during the investigation. As part of their continued inquiry, investigating officers have requested Call Record Details (CDR) of these numbers to further confront Abhijit Mondal.
The Bengal chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also been vocal about the necessity of Ghosh’s removal. On Tuesday, the IMA wrote to the West Bengal Medical Council, pressing for the cancellation of Sandip Ghosh’s medical registration.
In their letter, the IMA raised concerns about why the council had delayed the cancellation despite there being a clear provision for such action in its constitution.
The letter, signed by Dilip Kumar, the state president of IMA Bengal, and Santanu Sen, the former national president, made a pointed request to the council’s president, Sudipto Roy, a TMC MLA.
They stated-
“We urge you to keep your personal relationship with Dr. Sandip Ghosh apart and cancel his medical registration immediately.”
Sandip Ghosh was initially arrested by the CBI on September 2 in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
