Udit Raj launches explosive attack on CJI Gavai over SIR case, saying ‘end like Mayawati is certain’ as Ambedkar’s hopes collapse amid growing political and judicial controversy.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!NEW DELHI: Congress leader and former BJP MP Udit Raj has expressed his displeasure with Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, accusing him of missing an opportunity to emerge as a transformative figure like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The strong remarks came in the backdrop of the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar.
Taking to the social media platform X, Udit Raj wrote that when Justice Gavai became the 52nd Chief Justice of India in May 2025, there were widespread hopes among the people, especially Dalits, that an Ambedkarite voice had finally risen to the nation’s highest judicial position.
He noted,
“When Gavai ji had not become the CJI, people had great hopes that an Ambedkarite would become one for the first time. Due to the current bad conditions, there was hope that his arrival would improve. He got the opportunity and if he wanted, he could have become a mini Ambedkar but now time is running fast.”
Expressing disappointment that the CJI did not personally preside over the SIR case, Udit Raj added that the matter is linked to the “saving of democracy.” He warned that if Justice Gavai does not take strong action even now, his fate could be “certain like Mayawati.”
CJI BR Gavai’s Appointment
Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai took charge as the 52nd Chief Justice of India in May 2025. His tenure is set to last only six months, ending in November this year. Importantly, he is only the second Chief Justice of India from a Scheduled Caste background, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan.
His elevation had raised hopes among Dalit leaders, activists, and political groups that he would bring forward a more inclusive vision of justice. However, Udit Raj’s statement reflects growing dissatisfaction with his judicial choices, particularly regarding the sensitive voter list revision issue in Bihar.
The Bihar SIR Controversy
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar has triggered a major political storm. Opposition parties, including the Congress and RJD, have opposed the exercise, alleging that it is designed to manipulate voter lists ahead of elections.
The issue has already reached the Supreme Court, where a bench led by Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi is hearing the matter.
Udit Raj’s main criticism lies in the fact that the Chief Justice did not take up the matter personally, despite its far-reaching implications for democracy and representation.
