The election took place on February 3, and the MP has claimed that several Scheduled Caste (SC) representatives faced threats, abduction, and restrictions that prevented them from participating.

Tirupati: Tirupati Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Maddila Gurumurthy has written a letter to the Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, raising serious concerns about alleged human rights violations and unfair practices during the recent Tirupati Municipal Corporation deputy mayor election.
The election took place on February 3, and the MP has claimed that several Scheduled Caste (SC) representatives faced threats, abduction, and restrictions that prevented them from participating.
In his letter, Gurumurthy alleged that SC representatives were deliberately targeted and stopped from exercising their democratic rights. He claimed that some elected officials were “abducted, confined, and threatened” to stop them from voting freely.
According to him, these actions go against fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, including:
- Article 19(1)(b) – Right to peaceful assembly.
- Article 19(1)(d) – Right to move freely across the country.
- Article 19(1)(g) – Right to practice any profession or occupation.
The MP stated that preventing SC corporators from performing their duties is a serious violation of these constitutional rights.
Dr. Gurumurthy described an incident that took place on the election day, where a bus carrying SC corporators was allegedly attacked near the polling center.
He wrote that “the attackers allegedly broke into the bus, causing fear, and abducted four corporators.”
He argued that this incident violated:
- Article 21 – Right to life and personal liberty.
- Article 326 – Right to vote in elections.
The MP also criticized the law enforcement authorities, accusing them of failing to take action despite clear instructions from the Andhra Pradesh High Court to ensure free and fair elections. He expressed concern that the state government did not fulfill its responsibility to uphold law and order, which he described as a “breakdown in governance.”
Dr. Gurumurthy has urged the Chief Justice of India to intervene and order an independent judicial inquiry into the alleged election offences, including abduction and intimidation of SC corporators. He emphasized the need for justice and immediate corrective measures to protect the democratic rights of all representatives.
