A man has been sentenced to two years in jail for making a threat call against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. In a verdict issued on March 29, First Class Judicial Magistrate (Esplanade Court) Hemant Joshi rejected the defense’s claim that the accused, Kamran Khan, was mentally unstable. The case dates back to 2023 when Khan allegedly issued the threats. The ruling highlights the seriousness of making such threatening calls against public officials.
Mumbai: A Mumbai court sentenced a man to two years in prison for making a threatening call to the police, claiming that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was offering him money to assassinate PM Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The court stated that showing sympathy toward the accused was not warranted.
In a ruling delivered on March 29 regarding the 2023 case, First Class Judicial Magistrate (Esplanade Court) Hemant Joshi rejected the defense’s argument that the accused, Kamran Khan, was mentally unstable.
The magistrate noted that no evidence was presented by the accused to substantiate his mental health claims.
The court found Kamran Khan guilty of offenses under sections 505(2) (statements promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between classes) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Along with the two-year prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.
According to the prosecution, the accused made a call to the Mumbai police’s main control room in November 2023, threatening to blow up the state-run J J Hospital.
He further claimed,
“There is a threat to Modi’s life, Dawood Ibrahim is giving Rs 5 crore, he has asked (him) to eliminate Modi,”
The caller also alleged that Ibrahim’s associates, designated as global terrorists, were offering him Rs 1 crore to bomb Chief Minister Adityanath, the court was informed.
Police stated that the accused made the call while at J J Hospital in central Mumbai, where his medical examination was delayed due to a long patient queue.
The court noted that the police were put in a difficult position due to the crime committed by the accused.
It remarked,
“Furthermore, the repetition of such offences by the accused is evident from the complaint. Considering the strain on the government machinery and the security of the very specific individuals who were threatened due to such rumours, showing sympathy to the accused would not be justifiable,”
After reviewing all evidence, the court confirmed that the prosecution had successfully established that the threatening call originated from Kamran Khan’s mobile number, leading to his conviction for the charges against him.
