Geographical Constraints Must Not Block Justice: CJI Surya Kant

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said access to justice must transcend geography while inaugurating the Kargil District Court Complex in Ladakh, marking a significant step toward strengthening judicial infrastructure in remote regions.

LEH: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant emphasized that access to justice must go beyond physical borders, asserting that geographical distance should not hinder the delivery of justice. Speaking virtually to inaugurate the newly built District Court Complex at Kargil, the CJI marked a major advancement in the judicial infrastructure of the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The ceremony was attended by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Chief Justice of the High Court of J-K and Ladakh Arun Palli, Justices Sanjeev Kumar, Sindhu Sharma, Shahzad Azeem and Mohd. Yousuf Wani.

“Geographical constraints must not impede justice delivery,” the CJI said, calling the occasion a landmark in enhancing access to justice in remote areas. He added that Kargil stands as a symbol of resilience.

The new complex is more than an increase in physical facilities; it is a qualitative improvement in the justice delivery system that will bolster litigants’ confidence, he said. The event opened with the national song and national anthem, followed by the unveiling and formal reading of a commemorative plaque, an official spokesman reported.

A detailed 3D presentation highlighted the complex’s design and amenities, including courtrooms, administrative offices and residential quarters. Justice Arun Palli expressed hope for sustained backing for the region’s judicial infrastructure expansion and modernization.

L-G Saxena thanked the CJI for the inauguration, calling the event deeply meaningful. He described the complex as a testament to the Government’s commitment to accessible and effective justice and pledged full administrative support to the judiciary.

Justice Mohd. Yousuf Wani, the Administrative Judge for District Kargil, delivered the vote of thanks and acknowledged the contributions of all dignitaries. On behalf of the Chief Justice of India, he presented a symbolic key to a chamber in the lawyers’ chamber block to the senior-most advocate, Haji Ghulam Murtaza.

Riyaz Ahmed Khan, president of the Kargil Bar Association, thanked the CJI and administration, calling the inauguration the realization of a long-standing demand. He expressed confidence that the new complex will significantly strengthen the district’s justice delivery system.

Sharma, Registrar General; Basheer-ul-Hag, Administrative Secretary; Qureshi Tarig Mahmood, Law Secretary; Rajesh (APCC/CWOL), Leh; the Principal District and Sessions Judge, Kargil; the Deputy Commissioner; and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kargil.
