Supreme Court - Stray Dogs Removal | 'With Love, Not Force’: BJP Leader Maneka Gandhi Urges CJI To Reconsider Order

NEW DELHI: The recent Supreme Court order directing the removal of stray dogs from all localities in Delhi-NCR has sparked a heated public debate, triggering responses from both animal rights advocates and concerned citizens. Among the most notable voices is BJP leader and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi, who has urged the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to review the decision “with love” and focus on sustainable, humane solutions.

Speaking to ANI, Gandhi stressed that removing stray dogs from a region without addressing the underlying causes will not end the issue. She explained,

“Nobody favours the ill-treatment of animals. They believe that if animals are taken away, their children would not be bitten. I agree with that. But the animals would not go away. If we remove 3 lakh animals from Delhi, 3 lakh more would come in within a week from Ghaziabad and Faridabad.”

Highlighting a key point, Gandhi said that the abundance of food waste in Delhi attracts stray dogs. She also drew attention to the 50,000+ illegal chicken centres and unlicensed meat shops in the city, arguing that regulating these could be a crucial part of reducing stray dog numbers.

Her message to the CJI was heartfelt:

“Our goal is the same. We too want fewer dogs, we want no biting, and we want humans and dogs to live in peace.”

Supreme Court Responds

Following the criticism, the Supreme Court issued a clarification, stating that its directive was not a “momentary impulse” but the result of thorough and careful deliberation.

A bench led by Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Madadev observed that authorities had failed for over two decades to effectively tackle an issue that directly impacts public safety.

The court emphasized that its order aims to protect both humans and dogs, saying:

“The directions given by the court, as a court functioning for the welfare of the people, are in the interest of both humans and dogs. This is not personal.”

The August 11 Directive

On August 11, the Supreme Court ordered that all localities in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad should be made free of stray dogs with no compromise. Importantly, no captured animal will be released back onto the streets.

The detailed order also mentioned that the court has extensively reviewed the rising pattern of dog bite incidents across the country, considering both public safety concerns and animal welfare.
