New Delhi: Former Supreme Court Justice Arun Mishra has been appointed as the Ombudsman and Ethics Officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The announcement was made on Thursday(16th Jan).
Justice Arun Mishra has had a distinguished career. He was elected to the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh with record votes in 1989 and 1995. In 1998-99, he became the youngest Chairman of the Bar Council of India. He was appointed as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on October 25, 1999. Later, he served as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court from November 26, 2010, and as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court from December 14, 2012.
Additionally, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has been elected as the Treasurer of the BCCI.
According to sources, the BCCI held a special general meeting on Sunday to elect its new secretary and treasurer.
“This meeting marks an important transition for the BCCI,” said a source from the board.
Jay Shah, the former secretary of the BCCI, has assumed the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from December 1, 2024.
“Jay Shah’s leadership at the ICC is expected to bring significant changes to international cricket,” added an insider.
Former first-class cricketer Saikia also plays a important role in the BCCI. He represented Assam in the 1990-91 season, scoring 53 runs in four matches. He has served as the BCCI joint secretary and as the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association. Following the election of the previous BCCI secretary to the ICC, Saikia took on the role of acting interim secretary of the BCCI.
“Saikia’s experience in cricket administration will be invaluable to the board,” said a board official.
In another development, the BCCI has announced the Indian squad for the upcoming T20I series against England. The five-match series will start on January 22 in Kolkata, with subsequent matches in Chennai, Rajkot, Pune, and Mumbai. The final T20I is scheduled for February 2.
“Mohammed Shami’s return to the Indian squad strengthens our bowling attack,” said a BCCI spokesperson while announcing the 15-member squad.
The team includes Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, and Dhruv Jurel.
India’s home series against England will feature five T20Is followed by three ODIs.
