Chennai: On Wednesday(22nd May), Justice M.M. Sundresh of the Supreme Court highlighted on Wednesday that the expansion of judicial infrastructure in Chennai signifies the growing trust society has in the judiciary. His remarks were made during the foundation stone laying ceremony for a new five-storied building situated next to the esteemed Madras Law College heritage structure. This upcoming facility will house criminal and original side court halls, judges’ chambers, administrative sections, and a record room for the Madras High Court.

“The increase in the number of courts and expansion of judicial infrastructure in the country signify the trust that society places in the judiciary. It is expected that while criminal cases may decrease, there will be an increase in civil cases,” remarked the judge.

The ceremony also saw Justice Sundresh laying the foundation stone for the construction of 10 judges’ bungalows at Greenways Road. The event was graced by the presence of Madras High Court Chief Justice Sanjay V. Gangapurwala, Acting Chief Justice designate R. Mahadevan, and the High Court’s building committee chairman Justice D. Krishnakumar.

Chief Justice Gangapurwala took the occasion to introduce the ‘Chief Justice’s Relief Fund for the District Judiciary Employees’. This initiative, expected to benefit approximately 22,000 employees, is aimed at providing financial assistance to court staff. Justice Mahadevan received a copy of the scheme, which is set to be implemented from August 1, 2024.

Justice Sundresh, in his address, lauded the contributions of Chief Justice Gangapurwala to the Madras High Court during his nearly one-year tenure.

“The large turnout at the event, occurring just a day before his retirement, served as a testament to his commitment and earnest efforts in advancing the State judiciary,” remarked the speaker.

Delivering his speech in Tamil, Justice Sundresh drew connections between ancient Tamil literature and justice, stating-

“If justice were to be embodied in a language, it would undoubtedly be Tamil,”

He further commended the High Court for launching a relief fund scheme for district judiciary employees in Tamil Nadu, recognizing the importance of supporting the judiciary’s workforce.

This occasion signifies a noteworthy achievement in the advancement of judicial infrastructure in Chennai, mirroring a broader initiative to bolster the judiciary’s capacity in managing a rising number of civil cases, while concurrently endeavoring to mitigate criminal cases.

Anticipated to fortify the operations of the Madras High Court, the introduction of new facilities and programs aims to provide support to its staff, consequently enhancing the efficiency and efficacy of the judiciary throughout Tamil Nadu.

Justice Sundresh’s remarks and the initiatives announced at the event underscore the judiciary’s ongoing commitment to adapting and expanding to meet the needs of society. The construction of new court buildings and judges’ residences, coupled with the introduction of financial support schemes for judiciary employees, illustrate a proactive approach to judicial development and support.
