Banerjee declared that if the governor delays granting assent to the amended bill or refers it to the President for ratification, she would stage a dharna outside Raj Bhavan. She also stated that the TMC would initiate a grassroots movement starting Saturday to pressure the Centre to pass legislation enforcing the death penalty for convicted rapists.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday (28th Aug) emphasized her government’s zero tolerance toward rape, announcing that an amendment to existing laws would be passed in the state assembly next week to ensure capital punishment for convicted rapists.

“We will pass the amended bill in a special assembly session next week and send it to the governor for approval. If he delays, we will protest outside Raj Bhavan,”

Banerjee asserted at the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad foundation day rally.

The Chief Minister also urged junior doctors in Bengal, who have been on strike for 20 days, to return to work immediately.

“I have supported the doctors’ cause from the beginning as they sought justice for their colleague. We have not taken any action against them despite the prolonged strike. We understand your distress, but please return to work, as patients are suffering,”

she pleaded.

Criticizing the BJP for calling a 12-hour bandh, Banerjee accused the party of seeking political gain from tragedy. She claimed the BJP was exploiting public emotions following the death of a young woman, attempting to malign Bengal, and conspiring to derail the investigation into her death to prevent justice for the victim and her family.

RG Kar Doctor Rape-Murder

The RG Kar rape-murder case is one of the most horrifying crimes in recent memory, involving the brutal assault and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024.

The victim was found in a semi-nude condition, with Sanjoy Roy, a hospital staff member, identified as the primary suspect. The case has sparked widespread national outrage, leading to an intensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Autopsy reports have revealed disturbing details about the crime. While technical and scientific evidence has confirmed Roy’s presence at the crime scene, the results of DNA tests are still awaited.
