KOLKATA: Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer arrested in connection with the horrific rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, recently underwent a lie-detection test that has added new dimensions to the ongoing investigation.
According to sources close to the case, Roy made startling claims during the polygraph test, stating that he found the victim already dead when he arrived at the scene and fled out of fear.
“The victim was already dead when I spotted her,”
– Roy reportedly said during the test. Roy also cited multiple “alibis” during the interrogation, trying to prove his innocence.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been probing the case following Roy’s arrest on August 10, a day after the body of the 31-year-old doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the medical college. As the primary suspect, Roy has been under intense scrutiny. CBI sources reported that during the polygraph test, Sanjay Roy appeared “unnerved and anxious,” raising further suspicion about his involvement in the crime. The lie-detection test flagged several “false and unconvincing answers,” reinforcing doubts about his statements and actions surrounding the case.
The polygraph test, a tool frequently employed by investigative agencies to gauge the truthfulness of suspects, was conducted inside Kolkata’s Presidency Jail, where Sanjay Roy is currently held. According to an officer involved in the case, the test lasted for several hours as the authorities sought to uncover the truth behind the gruesome crime.
Roy’s legal defense had earlier informed that Roy was not opposed to undergoing the polygraph test, asserting that his client was confident in his innocence. The lawyer revealed that Roy had expressed to the special court-
“I am innocent” and “I was framed,”
thus agreeing to the polygraph in hopes of clearing his name. When the presiding judge inquired why Roy was willing to take the test, Roy’s lawyer quoted him saying-
“I also want the truth to be revealed through the polygraph test.”
as reported on August 24.
Roy, aged 33, was a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police at the time of his arrest. The investigation took a significant turn when a Bluetooth device discovered near the victim’s body was traced back to Roy, leading to his immediate apprehension. Further damning evidence included CCTV footage that placed him on the third floor of the hospital, close to the location of the seminar hall where the crime occurred.
In addition to Sanjay Roy, the CBI also conducted polygraph tests on several other individuals connected to the case. According to a report, four people, including Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH), underwent polygraph tests at the CBI’s Kolkata office. The results from these tests are expected to aid the investigators in piecing together the events leading up to the doctor’s tragic death.
The CBI sought and received permission from a local court in Kolkata to subject a total of seven individuals, including Roy and the former principal, to the lie-detection test. While it is important to note that polygraph test results cannot be used as direct evidence in a court of law, they are instrumental in guiding the investigative process, helping the agency to focus its efforts in the right direction.
Amidst these developments, there has been growing unrest among the junior doctors at RGKMCH, who have been on a strike demanding justice for their deceased colleague. The protesting doctors have been on a cease-work strike for 17 consecutive days, which has severely impacted healthcare services in the region. They have vowed to continue their protest until justice is served and have called for the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, whom they hold responsible for the perceived mishandling of the case.
