NEW DELHI: Justice Sanjiv Khanna assumed office as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) on November 11, succeeding Justice DY Chandrachud, whose term concluded on Friday.
Justice Chandrachud, in his final address, expressed contentment with his tenure and sought forgiveness if he had inadvertently caused offense, stating, “I won’t be able to deliver justice from tomorrow, but I am content.”
Post-Retirement Benefits for Former CJIs
- Following recent revisions to retirement benefits, former Chief Justices of India are now entitled to round-the-clock security at their residences and
- 24/7 personal security guard for five years post-retirement.
- Additionally, they receive rent-free Type-VII accommodation in Delhi for six months after retirement, a privilege recently extended to retired CJIs.
- These accommodations are generally allocated to MPs and former Union ministers.
- Former CJIs will also have lifelong access to domestic help and a chauffeur from the day of their retirement.
- Ceremonial lounges at airports, recently introduced for retired CJIs and Supreme Court justices, will also continue.
- They are provided with a residential telephone, reimbursed up to Rs 4,200 monthly (plus taxes) for telephone, mobile, and broadband services.

Justice Khanna, born on May 14, 1960, began his legal career in 1983 with the Delhi Bar Council. His notable cases include participating in the bench that upheld the abrogation of Article 370. With a six-month term as CJI, he is set to retire in May 2025.
