NEW DELHI: On the occasion of Constitution Day on November 26, Jammu and Kashmir High Court Justice Sanjeev Kumar underscored the need to understand secularism strictly through the constitutional framework rather than through personal, distorted, or locally shaped interpretations.

He stated that secularism draws its true meaning from fundamental rights and directive principles laid out in the Constitution of India.

Justice Kumar emphasized the values of brotherhood, peace, and harmony among different religious communities, urging citizens to respect each other’s faith.

“Let us live together, let us respect each other, let us respect each other’s religion and bring true secularism to this country.”

He stressed that true secularism reflects equal respect for all religions and can only flourish when people collectively uphold constitutional values.

Speaking to the media, Justice Kumar reflected on November 26, 1949, the day India adopted its Constitution. He described the Constitution as a “beautiful document”, whose Preamble embodies the nation’s core democratic principles.

He added that reading the Preamble on Constitution Day encourages citizens to remember and reinforce foundational values such as:

The day, he said, serves as an opportunity to renew commitment to the vision of the Constitution’s framers.

Concluding his remarks, Justice Kumar urged people to maintain unity and harmony, strengthening the nation through mutual respect and constitutional discipline. He appealed for citizens to uphold brotherhood, unity, and peace, which form the bedrock of a strong and diverse India.
