Kamakhya Temple Row Erupts After Raja Raghuvanshi Murder: Cousin & News Anchor Get Notices Over 'Nar Bali' Claim

GUWAHATI: The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya took a disturbing twist when false claims of human sacrifice at the Kamakhya Temple were made during a news broadcast.

Raja’s cousin Shrishti Raghuvanshi and a prominent news anchor suggested without evidence that Raja might have been a victim of “Nar Bali” (human sacrifice), sparking widespread outrage and religious backlash.

The Guwahati Police have since filed an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and summoned both individuals for spreading misinformation that could incite unrest and hurt religious sentiments.

The mysterious murder of Raja Raghuvanshi earlier this year in Meghalaya has not only shocked the nation but has also triggered an intense debate around media responsibility, religious sentiments, and legal accountability.

What started as a tragic case of betrayal and cold-blooded murder has now spiraled into a larger controversy involving one of India’s most revered religious sites, the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati.

Background of the Case

Raja Raghuvanshi, a 29-year-old man from Indore, married 24-year-old Sonam on May 11. Their marriage, however, was marred by deceit from the beginning. Unknown to Raja, Sonam maintained a relationship with Raj, an accountant at her family’s business. After the wedding, the couple went to Meghalaya for their honeymoon, but tragedy awaited.

On May 23, the newlyweds disappeared after checking out from a homestay in Nongriat village. Ten days later, Raja’s decomposed body was discovered 20 km away. The investigation intensified, and a nationwide manhunt began for Sonam.

She was eventually found and surrendered at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 8. Within days, she confessed to the murder. Alongside her, several accomplices including Akash, Vishal, Anand, and Raj were arrested from different parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

The Kamakhya Temple Controversy

While the murder investigation proceeded, a separate controversy emerged in the media. During a live broadcast, an English news channel anchor interviewed Shrishti Raghuvanshi, Raja’s cousin, about his disappearance.

In that conversation, the anchor alleged that “Nar Bali” (human sacrifice) was practiced at Kamakhya Temple, a claim that Shrishti appeared to agree with.

The remarks went viral and sparked public outrage. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya and known for its spiritual and cultural importance, became the center of a storm fueled by misinformation. Both the anchor and Shrishti later apologized, calling it a “complete error of judgment.”

However, the damage was already done.

The Guwahati Police registered an FIR under sections 196(2), 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing that the remarks were made without any credible evidence or religious authority. The FIR also states that the anchor presented the information as factually correct, thereby misleading the public and potentially inciting religious unrest.

Both individuals were summoned under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita on June 23 and 24, but they failed to appear.

Police sources say that further legal action will be pursued for spreading false narratives that allegedly hurt religious sentiments and endangered the sanctity of Kamakhya Temple.

This multi-layered tragedy leaves the nation grappling with several disturbing questions about the state of media responsibility and public discourse.

The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi was a horrific act of personal betrayal and premeditated violence, but the controversy that followed has exposed deeper flaws in how information is disseminated and consumed. As Sonam’s own family cuts ties with her and Raja’s loved ones fight for justice, the nation must also reflect on the dangers posed by irresponsible journalism and sensationalist commentary.

Places like the Kamakhya Temple are not just religious landmarks, they are symbols of cultural heritage and spiritual identity, and they deserve protection not only from physical harm but also from the erosion of their dignity caused by reckless public discourse.
