Rahul Gandhi Faces Perjury Plea for Allegedly ‘Misleading Court’ in Savarkar Defamation Case

PUNE: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, faces a perjury application for allegedly misleading the court in a defamation case related to his remarks on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar “Veer” Savarkar.

The application has been filed by Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, representing Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Veer Savarkar. The legal move claims that Rahul Gandhi repeatedly denied receiving evidence linked to his controversial speeches delivered in London, despite court records showing that relevant documents were provided to him on multiple occasions.

According to the perjury application, instead of acknowledging receipt of these documents, Gandhi allegedly submitted a written statement (pursis) accusing Satyaki Savarkar of contempt of court. Advocate Kolhatkar has demanded that the court initiate perjury proceedings against the Congress leader for making false statements.

Speaking to ANI, Advocate Kolhatkar said,

“We have filed a perjury application against the accused Rahul Gandhi. Earlier, we had supplied the relevant copies to the advocate of the accused. He had received all the copies and signed the document before the court…He blatantly denies receiving any such material provided by us. The accused is misleading the court. Hence, we very strictly demand that action be initiated against the accused, as the accused holds a constitutional post, the Leader of the Opposition. On the 10th of September, the advocate for the accused is going to file a reply to this.”

Background: The Defamation Case

The defamation case arose from Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in London on March 5, 2023, where he allegedly made statements regarding Indian democracy and political leaders that Satyaki Savarkar claims were defamatory toward Veer Savarkar.

Following the London speech, Satyaki Savarkar filed a defamation complaint in the Pune Magistrate Court in April 2023, which was later moved to the Special MP-MLA Court. The complaint alleged that Gandhi’s statements insulted the legacy of the freedom fighter and caused mental distress to the family.

The court is now expected to hear arguments in the perjury case on 10th September 2025, when Gandhi’s legal team will file a response.
