The advocate’s body was found in a canal, and her face had been mutilated in an apparent attempt to obscure her identity, further adding to the brutality of the crime.
SCWLA expressed profound outrage and unequivocal condemnation of this despicable act, describing it as
“a grievous affront to our shared sense of justice.”
The Association emphasized that this murder is not an isolated incident but part of a larger crisis, one that reflects the alarming dangers faced by women in all professions, particularly in high-risk fields like law.
“This tragic event highlights an urgent and escalating crisis regarding the safety of women in the field of law and legal spheres,”
-SCWLA stated, linking the issue to the broader concerns about women’s safety across professions in India.
The Association also drew attention to another recent tragedy—the horrific rape and murder of a female doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. They noted that such incidents demonstrate that no workplace in the country offers women a sense of safety.
“At present, this is a distressing concern for every Indian woman working in any profession or workplace where none of them feel safe at their workplace, and their lives are at stake,”
-SCWLA lamented.
Particularly alarming in this case, SCWLA highlighted, was the inaction by bystanders and security personnel during the advocate’s abduction, calling it
“a disturbing systemic failure that must be urgently addressed.”
The Association is now calling for the immediate introduction and enforcement of comprehensive legal measures aimed at ensuring the safety and protection of women lawyers across the nation. They also urged the justice system to act swiftly in such cases, demanding that
“those convicted of such heinous acts receive capital punishment within 15-30 days to deter future crimes effectively.”
SCWLA also emphasized the need for preventive measures, such as mandating the installation of fully operational CCTV systems in all workplaces and institutions throughout the country.
“Such measures will not only serve as crucial evidence for investigating crimes more effectively and apprehending perpetrators, but also offer significant benefits for ensuring women’s safety,”
-the Association said.
They added that CCTV cameras could act as a deterrent against potential misconduct, provide real-time monitoring to address incidents swiftly, and enhance overall security through documented surveillance.
In closing, SCWLA called for decisive and immediate action to ensure justice for the victims of such heinous crimes and to protect women across the nation.
“The moment for decisive action is now,”
-they declared.
The Association emphasized the need for adopting-
“a severe attitude towards the perpetrators of such egregious acts”
and ensuring that justice is delivered equitably to all women.
“The safety of women in our workplaces and beyond is a critical national issue, and we demand immediate, impactful reforms to address this grave injustice,”
-SCWLA stated emphatically.
They concluded with a rallying cry for women lawyers across the country to unite and fight for their safety rights:
“Enough is enough. The time has come for the women lawyers of the country to come together and fight for their own safety rights as Enough is Enough Now.”
