President Droupadi Murmu hosted a grand welcome dinner at Rashtrapati Bhavan to honour new Chief Justice of India, Justice B.R. Gavai, who has been part of 700 benches in his six-year judicial tenure.

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu recently hosted a grand dinner at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre to welcome Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, the newly appointed Chief Justice of India (CJI).
The event was attended by prominent constitutional authorities and judicial dignitaries.

Guests included Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Law & Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
Former Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, sitting Supreme Court judges, Chief Justices from various High Courts, and other notable figures also graced the occasion.
Justice B.R. Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, with President Droupadi Murmu administering the oath. He is the second Dalit to hold this position, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, who served in 2007.
Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai began his legal career on March 16, 1985, working with the late Raja S. Bhonsale, a former Advocate General and High Court judge. He practiced independently in the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990 and primarily managed cases at the Nagpur Bench thereafter.

His expertise lies in constitutional and administrative law. He served as standing counsel for various municipal corporations, including Nagpur and Amravati, and represented autonomous bodies in the Vidarbha region.
From August 1992 to July 1993, he was the Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur Bench, later becoming the Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor on January 17, 2000.
On November 14, 2003, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court, becoming a permanent judge on November 12, 2005.
He has presided over numerous cases in Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji. On May 24, 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India.
Throughout his six-year tenure, Justice Gavai has been part of nearly 700 benches and has delivered several significant judgments, including key Constitution Bench rulings on fundamental rights and human rights.
Justice Gavai has also represented India at international conferences in cities such as Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), New York (USA), Cardiff (UK), and Nairobi (Kenya). He has lectured on constitutional and environmental issues at prestigious institutions like Columbia University and Harvard University. He is set to retire on November 23, 2025.
