Prathyusha Challa, an IIM Ahmedabad graduate, recently shared a viral video detailing her family’s struggles with alleged extortion and false accusations following her brother’s short marriage. She accused her ex-sister-in-law of filing a domestic violence case without investigation. The emotional toll has severely impacted her family and professional life, sparking discourse on legal reform.

Hyderabad: In a heartfelt and viral social media post, Prathyusha Challa, an IIM Ahmedabad graduate and Hyderabad resident, has brought public attention to her family’s distressing ordeal involving alleged extortion and false accusations. Through a YouTube video that has garnered millions of views, she detailed how her family has been entangled in a legal battle for the past five years after her brother’s brief marriage.
Prathyusha revealed that her brother, an assistant professor at an engineering college in Hyderabad, married a woman from Rajamundry in 2019. However, the marriage ended abruptly after just 10 days when her now-former sister-in-law left the house. Prathyusha alleged that the woman filed a domestic violence case under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) without any investigation or prior notice.
“She misbehaved with my parents, spoke foul language, and did not let my brother into his own bedroom. She often threatened suicide,”
Prathyusha stated in the video. She accused her ex-sister-in-law, along with her sister, brother, and boyfriend, of orchestrating an extortion plan, claiming that similar tactics had been used in another case involving her former sister-in-law’s family.
Prathyusha highlighted the emotional and physical toll the case has taken on her family.
“This has been traumatising. My parents’ health has declined,”
she said, emphasizing how the stress of the ongoing legal battle has severely affected their well-being. She also shared how the pending criminal case has hindered her professional prospects despite her outstanding academic record.
“I have been unable to find a job,”
she said, attributing the struggle to the unresolved allegations.
The video has ignited widespread discussion on social media, with many users expressing outrage over the alleged misuse of laws meant to protect women. One user commented,
“It’s honestly so sad to see how many men are getting trapped in false cases these days. Nobody’s saying real victims shouldn’t be heard, but false accusations are literally ruining lives.”
Another wrote,
“This needs to be addressed. Some changes should come in the law which are favourable towards men as well. If you think only the bride is a woman, then who are the mother and sister of the groom?”
Others criticized what they described as a growing trend of exploiting legal loopholes for personal gain.
“This is a new business model I believe! Marry a good guy, live with him for a week, file 498, and that’s it,”
a commenter remarked.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the need for legal reforms to address the misuse of laws like Section 498A. While these provisions are crucial for protecting women from genuine cases of abuse, critics argue that they are sometimes used to file false or frivolous complaints, causing immense harm to innocent families.
Prathyusha’s case highlights the urgent need for a balanced approach that ensures justice for all parties involved. Legal experts and social commentators have pointed out that mechanisms like stricter penalties for false accusations and expedited trials could help prevent such misuse.
As Prathyusha and her family await justice, her video continues to resonate with thousands of people who share similar stories of false allegations. Her courage in speaking out has opened up a vital dialogue on the importance of fairness and accountability in the legal system.
