NEW DELHI: At the combined convocation of Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University (DSNLU) in Visakhapatnam, Supreme Court Judge Justice Surya Kant delivered a heartfelt address, reminding young law graduates that the true measure of success in the legal profession is not confined to professional milestones but is deeply rooted in relationships, community, and compassion.
Justice Kant underlined a simple yet profound truth: happiness at home shapes happiness outside. While professional applause is fleeting, the bonds of family and friendship endure. He likened life to a Grand Prix race, where family and friends act as the essential “pit crew,” providing strength, comfort, and encouragement during life’s most challenging turns.
“The laughter, comfort, and love waiting for you after a tough day in court gives you the strength to face whatever comes next. Never underestimate the value of that pit stop,”
he told graduates.
Acknowledging that the practice of law often feels adversarial and isolating, Justice Kant urged young lawyers to resist neglecting personal ties in pursuit of career goals. He highlighted that true fulfilment lies in connection, not isolation.
“Fulfilment in this profession is not found in isolation – instead, it flourishes in community and connection.”

Reflecting on his own journey, Justice Kant recalled withdrawing from a judicial services interview early in his career and later pursuing a Master’s degree while already serving on the Bench. These uncertain and unconventional moments, he said, became stepping stones to growth.
He reminded students that purpose evolves and passion is cultivated over time:
- Be open to reinvention.
- Embrace uncertainty.
- Permit yourself to evolve, for growth rarely follows a straight line.
Justice Kant urged graduates to measure success not only through intellectual achievement but also through compassion, kindness, and the strength to nurture lasting bonds.
“Dare to be different. Dare to be kind. Dare to find happiness, both inside and outside your professional life.”
