A CBI court sentenced 10 individuals to double life imprisonment and four others, including former CPI(M) MLA K V Kunhiraman, to five years for the politically motivated murders of Youth Congress workers Kripesh and Sarath Lal in Kasaragod on February 17, 2019. The verdict reflects the severity of the crime and political rivalry.

Kasaragod: A CBI court on Friday (Jan 3rd) handed double life imprisonment to 10 individuals and sentenced four others, including former CPI(M) MLA K V Kunhiraman, to five years in prison for their involvement in the politically charged murders of two Youth Congress workers in Periya, Kasaragod district.

The court delivered the verdict after finding the accused guilty last Saturday in connection with the murders of Kripesh (19) and Sarath Lal P K (24) on February 17, 2019. The victims were Youth Congress workers who were brutally killed in what was alleged to be an act of political rivalry.

Among those convicted are K V Kunhiraman, former MLA and CPI(M) district leader; K Manikandan, Kanhangad block panchayat president; A Peethambaran, former CPI(M) Periya local committee member; and Raghavan Velutholi, former Pakkam local secretary.

The prosecution argued that the murders stemmed from ongoing politically motivated attacks and counterattacks between CPI(M) and Congress workers in the region. The CBI, which took over the investigation, pieced together evidence showing the meticulous planning and execution of the crime.

The double life sentences for 10 of the convicts reflect the gravity of the crime, while the five-year imprisonment for Kunhiraman and three others acknowledges their roles in the conspiracy and facilitation of the act.
