Attorney General R Venkataramani said on Saturday that lawyers are the custodians of peace, both inside their countries and across the world. He also suggested starting a global movement called ‘Lawyers for Peace‘ to help achieve peace worldwide.
Venkataramani was speaking at an online meeting organised by the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF). The meeting was held to strongly condemn the brutal terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam.
Talking about the importance of peace, he said, “As we all vow for a peaceful world, no person engaging in an act of terror can ever justify their actions based on faith or religion. It is important that humanity unconditionally declares that no such justification will ever be tolerated, and that terrorism must be eliminated forever so people can live in peace, friendship, love, and compassion.”
He emphasised that the entire world must work together to remove terrorism.
“The whole world must unite to achieve this. People from all over must join together. Lawyers are custodians of peace within and outside nations. SILF can take the lead in forming a ‘Lawyers for Peace’ initiative globally, a much-needed movement,” the Attorney General added.
Speaking with deep sorrow for the victims, Venkataramani said it was difficult to find words to truly console the families.
“Loss of life, especially of young people, is irreparable. SILF could send personal messages of sincere compassion to the families of victims, a small but meaningful gesture,” he said.
During the meeting, SILF members passed a resolution. They expressed complete support for the actions taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that the terrorists are brought to justice.
Speaking on behalf of SILF, President Lalit Bhasin strongly condemned the attack.
He said, “This atrocious act of terrorism has shocked the conscience of our nation and the world. Terrorism has no face or religion, and it must be condemned in the strongest terms. In these difficult times, our greatest strength lies in our solidarity and unity as a country.”
The legal community stood united, sending a strong message against terrorism and promising to work for peace and compassion across the globe.
Pahalgam Attack:
On April 22, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack occurred in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals and injuries to over 20 others. The victims were predominantly Hindu tourists from various parts of India, including a resident from Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Five militants, armed with AK-47s and M4 carbines and dressed in military-style uniforms, infiltrated the Baisaran Valley—a popular tourist destination accessible only by foot or horseback. The assailants reportedly segregated victims based on religion, asking them to recite Islamic verses or checking for circumcision to identify non-Muslims. Those identified were executed at close range.
One survivor recounted that the attackers spared her, instructing her to “go tell this to Modi,” referring to India’s Prime Minister.
The Resistance Front (TRF), an affiliate of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack. The group stated that the assault was in opposition to alleged demographic changes in the Kashmir Valley due to the settlement of non-locals. Indian intelligence identified Saifullah Kasuri (alias Khalid), a top LeT commander, as the mastermind behind the massacre.
