Pahalgam Terror Attack| “All Legal Service Committees Will Fulfill Their Responsibilities”: Justice Dipankar Datta

Supreme Court Judge Justice Dipankar Datta, reacting to the Pahalgam terror attack, said, “All legal service committees will do their job.” He expressed deep sympathy for the victims’ families and assured full legal support through official committees.

New Delhi: Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta expressed his sorrow over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the Supreme Court’s commitment to supporting the victims.

He stated,

“Our hearts go out to all the bereaved families. We have resolved in the Supreme Court that all legal service committees will fulfill their responsibilities. We stand with the victims, and whatever can be done through NALSA or any other legal services committee, we will ensure it is done. We pray to God that such incidents do not occur again.”

In a similar vein, Delhi High Court Judge Justice Saurabh Banerjee conveyed optimism for a brighter future, saying,

“I deeply regret what has happened… I believe we will soon witness the dawn of a good day, where our brothers and sisters in Kashmir will share the same beliefs we hold as Indians.”

Meanwhile, the family of Shubham Dwivedi, one of the attack victims, has urged the government to recognize him as a martyr.

His wife, Eshanaay, voiced her distress, highlighting the plight of victims’ families, stating,

“People often forget the families left behind, like those from the Pulwama and 26/11 attacks. We don’t want Shubham to be forgotten, so I request the government to grant him martyr status.”

The tragic attack in Pahalgam on April 22 resulted in the deaths of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, with many others injured, marking one of the most devastating incidents in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.

A tragic terrorist attack took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and KashmirOn April 22, 2025, which claimed the lives of 28 people. The attackers, believed to be linked to The Resistance Front (TRF), a group associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, targeted a group of tourists.

They separated men from women and children before shooting them at close range. The victims were chosen because they could not recite Islamic verses, and many were killed at restaurants and in wooded areas.

Justice Dipankar Datta is a prominent Indian jurist currently serving on the Supreme Court of India. He was born on February 9, 1965, in Kolkata, into a family with a rich legal heritage. His father, the late Justice Salil Kumar Datta, was a Judge at the Calcutta High Court, and his brother-in-law, Justice Amitava Roy, previously held a position as a Supreme Court Judge.

Justice Datta practiced law for around 16 years, primarily at the Calcutta High Court, and also represented clients in other High Courts, tribunals, and the Supreme Court. Throughout his career, he has provided legal counsel to various entities, including the State of West Bengal, the Union of India, and numerous statutory authorities.
